Alternatively you could just get a smaller hybrid frame and use all of the parts you already have. Evans have them from £75.00

That thought did occur - looked at the Evans site - or I could just hang on to my slightly-too-big Sirrus, it's been fine for 6 years! :D

+1 To everyone who suggested the Kaffenback.
I'm rapidly approaching my first thousand miles on mine and most of that has been in rain and mud. Other than (the to be expected) cable stretch, it hasn't missed a beat.
If you don't go for the Kaff, definitely go for discs. They are great.

On another note, my sister said I always think whatever thing I bought is the best version of that thing.
I replied that before I buy something I research my options and then make my decision based on the relevent parameters and how much weight I put on each individual parameter, so I do think I've bought the best version of that thing. The conversation with my sister was about my phone but the same principle applies with bikes.
Before I bought the Kaff, looked at what I wanted the bike for (commuting/workhorse), I wanted disc brakes so went for BB7s over BB5s because everyone says they are better, I wanted a steel and no carbon (maybe irrational, but my bike, my rules), road bike because hybrids are the work of a mischievious devil. I also like the black paintjob on the Kaff and the reflective stripes (I was thinking about applying black reflectives on another black bike I have).
The Kaff has a cx style frame and can handle a bit of rough stuff, but it isn't a cx bike.

For £800, I think its is one helluva good buy.

Most of what EKE said is quite right, and for the money the Kaff is a very good buy. The Kaff is better suited as a work horse, I could justify a bit more bling and had slightly different priorities, which led me to what is actually the best bike. And it's green.

Other. Thanks anyway, but think I'll have to stick with what I have... for now

Planet X paid me to say that I'm not on commission.

When I eventually put mudguards and pannier racks on, I will have the perfect work horse for me.

I was going to get a Kaff but it is not a crosser and it only accepts up to 32c tyres so no studded tyres in the winter.

This is why I got the Singular, plus the option for single speed.

Worth noting that the Kaff and the Peregrine are pretty much the same weight, just that PX only list frame weight and Singular list frame and fork.

yes, the singular looks good, shame about the price of the frame, which is double of the kaff :(

TBH that's a real shame as it seems to tick all the other boxes :(
  • Yes the Kaff is not a crosser but there are plenty of crossers out there and the Kaff is meant to give something different. I have got 32mm tyres on with mudguards and that is fine for me.

If you really want a good value crosser that takes guards and 35mm tyres then look at the Boardman CX as plenty of people seem to like them.

Another similar non-CX Disc option is the Ridgeback Advance 7 - £900 which is pricey for Sora, but forks are carbon (Alu frame) and it comes with a triple. Think the Kaff is better value, though

It only took 40+ posts, but someone eventually suggested the Boardman. Has it fallen from grace that badly?

Schwalbe do 700 x 30c Winter Spikers. Only 118 spikes compared to 700 x 35c Marathon Winter's 240 spikes, but you can get spikes for a Kaff.

For snow, rather than ice, how about doing this:

    Advance 7 Vs Kaffenback
    Triple - Double
    Sora - Tiagra
    Aluminium (carbon fork) - Steel
    BB5 - BB7
Matt Black - Satin Black (with reflective stripes)
10.4kg - 11.3kg (I think thats how much mine weighed)
    £900 - £800

I wanted steel but could have been tempted by an alu bargain. I definitely didn't want any carbon.
I didn't want a triple, or Sora. I wasn't put off by the extra weight and the reflective stripes are just cool.
Save £100 and get a Kaff.

  • I bought a Kaff 2 on the very day they were released and have ridden over 2,500 miles on it, I love it and would definitely recommend anyone buying it if it suited their needs but I would also recommend buying the Boardman CX as a friend of mine has one and it is a very very nice bike.

I wanted a steel bike and not another alloy one otherwise the Boardman would have been top of my list too.

They are both excellent value bikes!

He does say he is after a cross style not an actual cross frame

  • Not if you want a cross bike it isn't!

Nor if you want to use 35mm tyres with mudguards!

Also it is possible that you live in an area with very high powered magnets that pull steel bikes towards them and you have to ride the other way...

I know I am being silly but you started it...

The OP doesn't want a cross bike, a "Cross-style frame" is what they want and I think the Kaff is the best bike to fulfil that criteria, unless the magnet thing happens.
[Silly]In which case I suggest a carbon bike with alloy and/or ceramic finishing kit. [/silly]

I'm considering a Kaffenback 2 as it seems the perfect all rounder! Most of my riding will be commuting but do you find it suitable for longer training rides and even the odd sportive?
  • The easy answer is yes it works well for all types of riding.

I also own a 7.2kg carbon bike and to be honest I am still riding my Kaff at weekends which weighs twice as much with the full length mudguards, rack and rack pack attached. At least I know if the heavens open up I will be fine for braking and I won't get the thin wet line on my back.

I will go back to riding the carbon bike at weekends when the weather gets better but right now the Kaff is used 7 days a week and I love it.

If I had to choose one bike only for the rest of my life it would be the Kaff no doubt.

Thanks. I used to ride a Planet X Pro Carbon, during a wet sportive last year I couldn't stop on a descent and had to bail at speed!!!
I liked the carbon bike but now want disc brakes and as this would mainly be used for commuting I thought the Kaffenback seemed perfect - just wanted to know if it would suit the odd longer ride / sportive too
