    Cheers rookie. How soon? ;-)

  • That's a shame need them this weekend :-( looks like CRC next deli!!

What grease do you use for the forks? Can I use normal mechanic grease?
  • Thats gunna be a cool bike

No I think the litium effects the rubber on the seals, I got fork grease from CRC
  • Thanks for the heads up :-)

  • Bit if a tech question.

The Vulcan had an acera band on FD, the band was low. I want to swap it for my XT which is band on but the band is high. Will it be compatible?

Yes, the Vulcan will take either, the only issue is when a bottle cage bolt boss gets in the way of it being where it has to be, this isn't an issue on the Vulcan - I've run both on mine with no issue, but now it's 1x9 so no FD! Careful though, some high mount XT's are certainly heavier than low mount Deore, so be sure you know why you want to change!

  • Thank Rookie

Replacing with what I got to be honest.
  • Will the Vulcan work with an 80mm fork or is it better with 100mm??

Continued the sanding and prep today. Just needs a final once over and clean then it's ready for paint.

What primer have people used for painting bikes?

I found it much cheaper in practice to get my frame blasted and powder coated, the results also looked loads better than a home rattle can job. I think I pay £40 for a blast and powder coat locally. Paint WILL cost you more from halfords

For aluminium you MUST use an etch primer, try the yellow pages for local paint specialists, I then used 1 large can of colour and one can or lacquer, lots of thin whispy coats to prevents runs and you end up with a nice finish.

£40?! Wow!! Where is that? I've been quoted £80!
  • Well finally got round to finishing the sanding and prep and I've just started painting, getting blasted and powder coated locally was looking too expensive, so may have made a mistake but im painting it myself! ;)
  • Frame primed just allowing it dry out properly before I sand and prep for colour

Don't worry BB is an old sacrificial one :)

Sorry mate just saw I never replied!

A powered coater in Coventry has done a few frames for me, great job.

I have just had another frame done by blastcoat in Newport as well which has cost £100 including vapour blasting and two stage powder coating in a candy pearlescent pink! Will post pics shortly
  • No worries mate - I've actually quite enjoyed getting involved in the strip and painting so far. Fingers crossed I can get a decent finish :)
  • Added some colour

The wife's choice as it will be her bike but I think it looks ok

Not a bad colour' slightly feminine....which of course makes sense, personally I masked up fully, as you may get some nasty paint cracking when you take that BB out and you should really have masked where the headset goes and inside the seat tube.

  • Oops! The BB should come out ok as is only in very loosely to 'protect' the threads. I'll mask up for the next coat and lacquer.

To be fair the colour is alot brighter, and even more feminine, in the flesh!

I thought it may be as there doesn't look like much light on it in the photo.

My daughters frame is Barbie pink (with pink brake cables, grips and pedals) so I'm not going to criticise the colour, besides they are more likely to ride it if they like the colour!

  • Might do my Kraken pink when I do it!! Lol

My wife wanted me to paint the forks, the bar and the stem white for a nice colour scheme????

The BB has loosened with no probs - phew

Don't paint the stem or bars, it won't be robust enough and will look a mess in no time.

Fork lowers can be done but it won't be as hard wearing as the original finish and you need to remove the seals and any oi/greasel that's got on the lowers (scrupulously) before spraying, personally I wouldn't, and if your still using Suntour XC range just look around for some cheap forks with white lowers and swap!

They're usually semi-integrated/zero stack headsets in the Carreras. Halfords should have them in stock if you want to keep it simple.

Thank you - nipped into H today before seeing your post and asked where they kept headsets, to which the bike chap replied that they don't sell any kind of microphones or headphones! I'll quickly left...
