Garmin 800 workout programming help

I currently use Garmin Connect to program my workouts onto my device, but I would like some way of reminding myself what power range I'm aiming for in each step. I know it's possible to set a range but due to the way that power fluctuates on the road I find I'm always getting an out of zone warning flashing up which gets irritating, so ideally I'd just like to be able to set a note that flashes up at the start of each step and then leaves me to it.

Anyone know if there's some way of doing this please?

Hi there, just from memory, inhad a bit of a problem with that wjth heart rate instead of power, and I just changed the feild from heart rate to a set time sometimes the workouts seem to stop if you drop out of range.. The other option is to go into the settings and change (widen) the range on the heart rate/power to suit the ranges you need. I set my cadence note to pop up when I drop to 80 to encoursge me to pick back up to 90. So leave a buffer in the range to allow for a drop when you ease off for what ever reason.

I dont have a power meter but the thing I did with the speed is set the ranges to match what I usually ride at for a sprint, a cruise and a lead out. And I changed the name of the zone to sprint, cruise, and lead out. So for example, I have a workout where I change pace on intervals. So for I go easy for a minute, then when that minute is up it tells me 30 seconds cruise, or 30 seconds leadout. And I can hold the speed easier in my own ranges and easier than trying to pick out figures on an interval.

Thanks for the replies, I do just program the time and have it set as no target now, the problem is remembering what range I'm aiming for in each interval as they are quite varied so not as easy as using 5 or so zones unfortunately.

Since the original post I have worked out I can do what I need using garmin training center and setting a the traget power as a custom name on each step, bit annoying as I'd prefer to do it from garmin connect but it will have to do!
  • Training Centre is the only way I have found to add the name to the workout. Drop an enhancement request to Garmin to add this to Connect, maybe they'll listen.

Something else you could play with - if you edit the workout on the Edge itself (with the 500, don't know about the 800) you can change the metric for the interval from Power to 10s Av Power or 30s Av Power. I found that I still got too many false alarms so gave up on this.

Another thing, the workout files are just XML files. If you at up to speed with XML in Excel or similar, you could try writing your own.
