That's rubbish but you can't blame them for wanting to sell you the rest of the 6870 kit. I know as I have done this to my bike and my GF's, recently. Nothing works until you have v2.2 uploaded, though.
Here's what to do...
Download v2.2 this from the eTube website. It's a big file and takes quite a while to download.
Pull the lead off the battery holder and remove the battery. The ECU is in this and this needs v2.2 first. Follow the instructions on screen to upload the latest OS.
Once you have updated the battery holder, disconnect PCE, re-connect the bike's cable and re-fit the battery.
Plug the PCE into a spare port in one of the shifters. You can access these by pulling up the rubber hood and removing the little plastic bung in the spare port. These ports are for climbing shifters or aero bar switches. Once connected, you will get a list of all components that are connected and they will show as yellow on the screen. Work your way through the list, updating each component one by one. Once done, they all show as green.
You will get a message saying that some functions of your 6870 rear deraileur may not work. Ignore this, they do.
With v2.2 uploaded you can also change shift speeds, add 'press and hold' functions and re-assign switch functions.
I have mine set as Fast changes, press and hold is 3 cogs across and I have my switches set as 'paddle shift' mode. The two front buttons control the FD and the two rear paddle type buttons control the RD. This is really nice to ride with. Left hand makes it easier, right hand makes it faster.
And that sums up why I won't be going Di2 unless there's no other choice. Getting disparate electro mechanical stuff to work together reliably long term is royal PIA and not something I want to do for hobby as I already do it for a living.
You have me mistaken. I am 100% happy with my Di2 and so is my GF, who also has it. We have no issues and have easily customised it to suit our requirements.
If that ability to customise sums up why you don't want it, well, it isn't for you anyway then. Each to their own.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Sorry I wasn't having a pop at you personally. It was the level of tinkering followed by the essay on how to frig Shimano's coding to fool it into working that puts me off. That's not to say I was particularly 'on' in the first place as I prefer the simplicity of mechanical and enjoy any fettling that maybe required.0

You don't have to tinker at all but if you don't want Di2 I am not quite sure what you hope to add for those of us here who do enjoy tinkering.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Boblo - If I'm reading Bar Shaker's last comment correctly, I would have to agree, not sure what else you have to add to this forum topic which is asking for help. You can certainly say what you want - it is your right. I'm sure you're a really nice guy in person, but comments like, "I wouldn't do it", "why do people do it", etc. are probably discussed better in another topic and if not, maybe start a topic that's helpful for people on the fence of whether they should move from Mechanical to Electronic shifters, and discuss the pros and cons - people can rant there of good/bad experiences. People have different temperaments, so after laying out - let them make the informed decision. This topic was about someone trying to find an answer to a problem. Saying don't do it after a person has made the decision just doesn't help. Offering ideas / solutions are.
On a side note (probably should be in a Pro/Con of going to Electronic Shifters topic) - Outside of $$$$ (which it is not a cheap upgrade), there may be other reasons to switch - i.e) I was chatting with another rider who switched because of strength issues in the wrist etc. The Di2s made it easier for him. and he could continue to enjoy riding. Also, most don't have to tinker with Di2s and once setup they just work. Some don't care about multi-shift, switching the buttons, or upgrading. It's like some people need to switch out cars more frequently then others - to each his own as Bar Shaker said. My wife loved the Di2s when she tried them, but from a budget standpoint it didn't add much value to her riding experience (what she wanted to experience on a ride which is different from someone else) so decided to just upgrade her mechanical system - still not cheap, but the new ultegra shifters she put in were night and day for her and she was happy.
With that said - Boblo, you are still free to say what you want, but my opinion is to find or start the appropriate forum topics for the rants you want to express...0 -
Quite right Scrimpchip.
It seems almost impossible for anyone to post a Di2 technical query, such as this one, in the correct forum, such as this one... without someone coming along and saying how they don't like the idea of Di2, don't want it, can't afford it, think it is responsible for the current situation in Gaza.
I am not aware of any single other product where people feel such a constant need to interrupt technical threads, to tell us they won't be buying that product.
But... it is indeed their 'freedom of speech' right to tell us that they won't be buying it.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

I bought a Garmin 520, wanted the gears on the display, which required a firmware update so ended up buying a FD6870 for mine.S-Works Tarmac Disc Di2 2017
