Achilles Tendon Pain

Hi

Whilst it does not occur on the bike when I'm riding, occasionally I get a really bad sharp pain in my achilles tendon. I do no other exercise apart from cycling and have no recollection of straining anything any other way. I just wondered if anyone had developed anything similar.

Whilst I may be answering my own question, I do feel that my cleat positioning on the affected foot is not quite right (it was, it may need readjusting) but still not sure if that is the cause.

Thanks

I got it with some new shoes until I got the cleats positioned correctly. It took a couple of tweeks and it's been OK since.

Cleat position can cause it, tight soleus and gastroc can cause it, saddle height can cause it if you are dorsiflexing your foot, overuse can cause it

Pick one at your peril. If it's persistant stop, hot/cold, NSAIDS and if unsure, sport physio. Don't let it become chronic

NeXXus makes a very good point about not riding with it if it's persistent, see a sport physio.

I suffered from it for a while. Mine was caused by a combination of saddle height and hamstring tightness. Working on my flexibility let me actually raise the saddle to a more efficient position, and got rid of the achilles issue.

It's a complex thing, as the achilles is at the end of a complex chain of muscles and stringy bits :D Just don't grin and bear it, that way trouble lies.

For me my saddle was not quite far enough forward. After moving it forward never had a problem since.

Seems common then, thanks for the replies. Will adjust cleat and see if it improves. New bike coming in April which will mean a bike fit too. Should highlight any issues.

Once you make any adjustments you may still find the only way you will recover sufficiently is to give it plenty of rest. At least that's what I found after similar problems.
