Using different bikes ?

This could be a stupid question but !
I've been riding since October and planning to ride a few sportives this year starting end of March 60ish miles and building up to 100+ in August. Currently I'm riding a old racer converted to single speed ,I've got up to riding distances of 40 miles. So this is my question riding on a night in the dark I've been riding a "mountain bike" because I feel safer better brakes, visibility and not so bone shaking when you hit a pot hole in the dark is this the right thing to do or should I stick to the s/s road bike? Will it hinder training using different bikes?
I have plans to buy a new bike for the end of February beginning of March, something like a genesis cdf. My plan was to build a good peddling rhythm by riding a s/s
Thanks

As long as they are set up for you and no risking getting an injury from a poor fit then why not, can be (IMO) some advantages of riding different bies.0
