When to take a rest?

How often do you take a rest day? I went to do my normal training session today and felt pretty low on energy. My muscles also didn't feel like they were working that well.

Do you just push through and let your body self limit itself? Or do you back off and take a break?

I had my Heart Rate monitor and, and I am sure my HR was a bit lower than normal.

I usually take one day a week off but some weeks it has to be two if I feel really knackered when I get home from work. IME your body will tell you but try and structure rest days into your training schedule they do help.
  • In this case, your body is telling you. Maybe go for a light spin, that might help.

    Everyone is different.
When was your last rest day ?
Are you following a plan ?
  • Cant remember when last rest day was. Certainly not before Christmas. If I don't train, I just feel a bit "bleugh"

Your body is trying to tell you something then. You do need rest.
Decent training plans factor in rest and follow hard weeks with easy weeks.

Also make sure you get enough sleep over night as well. Having rest days but not sleeping properly is counterproductive.

Rest is as important as training.

If you're training for intensity then the goal is to push more power than last workout. If you feel you can't, then don't.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Sounds like you're overtraining. I think unless you're an elite / pro cyclist then you should have at least 1 day of rest per week, better still 2. All the training books I have say every 4th week should be an easier week as well.

I now train 5 days a week. I was only having 1 day a week off 12 months ago and then not really planning when it should occur. I was getting fatigued. Now it's usually Monday and Friday off. I'm training less days per week but more hours. I'm a lot fitter than I was 12 months ago.

    Don't listen to this advice.

This would almost certainly lead to you to lose fitness!

There's very little point in doing a high power interval training session if you can't hit your targets. No extra demand means little or no uselful training stimulus.

I'm not saying don't do any work, and I'm not saying don't continue to do your endurance work.

I've found taking one day off works fine and lets my legs healup. Remember during the "REST period" is when your body/legs gets most gains.
Try high cadence (90-110rpm)-I was advised to do this on this forum and it has helped a lot.
