Recording rides

Not the best title and doesn't really describe what I'm asking. Perhaps I'll edit it when I think of something more applicable.

Anyway back to point in hand. With all the apps and hard wear out there that record your efforts when out riding, do and how do you record it? And I don't just mean within strava etc. I'm sure I've seen in the past that some people record training on spreadsheets or similar. What do you record, how and do you have any examples I can look at? Just trying to find a way of measuring my improvements especially heart rate I guess
Thanks

    Search for Golden Cheetah.

You can use a GPS device, HRM, power meter or just enter rides manually.

I use good old fashioned excel.
I have a garmin that logs into my pc but prefer to look at a spreadsheet for the basics to compare different rides.

I record distance, time, avspeed, av heart rate, weather conditions (gives me a reason why I rode so slowly)

    +1

Got graphs to compare against time or year on year.
All the gear, but no idea...
  • @buckles Golden Cheetah looks like fun. Need to investigate further

@lefire & @hector do you have a screenshot I can see please? How do you upload rides into excel?

How strange, this evening I was pondering how to export data from strava or garmin connect into excel so I can see how my average speed has changed in a year. If there's a method that's better than looking through every ride and building a spreadsheet i'd be grateful for some thoughts.
  • ProLog Cycling log for me. It's an Xcel spreadsheet file that's set up with macro's etc to record and analyze your rides. Even though I use Strava etc, having things on a Spreadsheet is a lot easier to see e.g. month by month distances

  • I still use SportTracks for recording activity and producing reports. The number of reports it can produce is vast either on its own or with addons and you can overlay queries as in this first image of pace V HR across a short ride.

As in these images from a data set such as a year's riding you can easily analyse the year by, for example, pace by month, time of day, type of riding and day of week but there are plenty of other metrics you can select from drop down menus .

Hadn't thought about comparing time of day.
I went out this afternoon and felt a lot slower than any of my normal morning rides.
A bit tricky to get out early when the weather is so wet but will look to see if there is a pattern.
    I love this geeky stuff.

Maybe I should forget the analysis and just get out (on the road) more :-)

Think I should do the same too!

I've looked at all the suggestions now and still don't know what to do! If i do this. I need to upload my polar HRM files and although I've not looked closely at them all yet, I know the Prolog site doesn't support these files. I have previously uploaded a csv file of a ride, but if I remember correctly there were just 100's of lines and I couldn't be a$$ed to figure out what I needed to do. Perhaps I should just keep it simple like suggested above and record date, mileage average heart rate etc. probably easier and all I need in the end
