Leg burn out

Hi all,

Done a couple of rides this weekend and with increased climbing (not loads still a newbie ;-) ) I'm finding my legs are really burning out but I don't feel overly exhausted, if that makes sense.

Is there a way To train to help this? Or is it a nutrition thing?

I'm not unfit as I play a lot of football, cycling is a different fitness I guess, but not used to my legs letting me down. :(

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

    Thanks Buckles.

Was hoping this wouldn't be the case :(

Do I just cut back on the cycling? Or football and training as well?

Can I do upper body work, just no leg weights?

Cut it all and rest, it will make a difference.

Maybe have a go with a foam roller after your rides. Might aid recovery a bit.

Can't answer that as I don't know how often you exercise, how hard you exercise, how much sleep you get, how long it takes you to recover etc .

Just have one or two days rest, you'll probably feel much better

Train once or twice a week on the bike, twice / 3 times a week football training, football game once a week

Normally fine the day after unless had a break, generally get 8 hrs, I'm a teacher so on my feet a lot of the day
  • For me, I think a lot of the burn is in the head.. Try and push thru the pain, on a long hill I can push thru the the burn 3 or 4 times...I like the feel of the pain...I also find that mountain biking really helps as well, all this mud and slope is hard work, and great for training...

This may not be the answer but it's sure better than resting!!

Hmm. This to me sounds like exactly the wrong thing to do.

I would have though that by doing this, all you'll do is burn yourself out after the first hill and then your legs are toast for the rest of the ride. Sounds like your gearing is wrong to me. Would be better to have lower gearing so that your legs take less of the strain and you push your cardio system harder instead.

If you're new - you wont have developed the cycling muscles sufficiently yet. So your legs will tire quicker than the rest of your body. Football and running etc uses different muscle groups.

Train and rest and you will improve.

Some people do actually suggest that as an alternative to buying a foam roller. It would still massage your muscles, so why not? Cheaper if you have one lying around. A rolling pin works well as well

Using lower gears so you ride at a higher cadence might help.

This. Every time I decide to take up running I head out. Fly around my local circuit and get home feeling great, then I wake up the next day and can hardly move my legs as I've completely overworked a group of muscles I don't use much on the bike...

Rest a bit to recover then ride more and let your body adapt.

I was going through the same issue since i started cycling in May last year. Same like you i played football & rugby before.
I took 3 weeks off and started riding on high cadence (95-105 rpm) vs riding in a big gear. Leg feels fine.
