I didn't really have a target as this was my first year of cycling and didn't know what to expect. My main goal was to do a 50. Once, I'd done that it was a case of just getting out as much as possible and upping the mileage until I' d done a century.

I've done around 4500 GPS recorded miles, and about 600 when I didn't have a gps ( most of Jan and some of April). It should have been more but I had to miss out on a lot of cycling due to a fork breakage in March, a 6 week period in August -September with no bike and a crash in December. Found it difficult getting back after that 6 week break of doing nothing apart from eating junk food :(

Just finished on 6413 and 600 for December. Quite pleased with that having missed most of July and August due to injury...
  • Just back from a 27 miler today to finish the year off .. initial target was 6500 miles, but have covered 10249 miles for the year. Target next year is to complete similar distance and to break 500,000ft of climbing (around 380,000 this year).

5000 miles is a great effort. Managed over 4000 myself, and hit my target of 100,000 meters climbed for the year. Although not entirely accurate, and I missed out a few rides due to a faulty GPS I'm quite happy with that.

you did 100,000 meters of climb in 4000 miles?! thats over a 15% average gradient! nice work! do you live in the alps?

Haha I wish I did live in the alps! According to veloviewer:

    Total dist:
    6,684 km
    Total elev:
    102,074 m

I did a few rides in the alps, cumbria and county durham but 99% of my riding is in N Wales. I hardly ever do rides exclusively on the flat. Where I live you can easily link up a number of cat 3 climbs (and a couple of cat 2s) and get to an almost alpine level of meters climbed in a ride, but obviously very different to slogging it up 10-30km cols.

A bit frustrating for me... I'd hoped to make 10,000kms (6213 miles) this year. I had a crash on 1st December which pretty much put me out of action for most of December and I ended up with:

    5,288 miles
    319,278 feet of climbing

On reflection, given the bad weather I probably wouldn't have made it anyway.

    Ooerr... Didn't realise I had done 10k!
  • "So, I ended up with 400 miles to do in the last 2 weeks"
    Thats why you were out all the time the last few weeks then :}

From June when I had a record of distance I had 1950miles done so im looking at possible 4k plus for this year

Good effort on the 5,000 but don't go overboard, set yourself similar goals or not.

A steady 500 miles per month for me turned into 7220 for the year, so this year its 500 a month minimum.
but with bigger climbs and more suffering  and quality miles only even if I do less than last year.

Its very addictive this cycling lark, maybe it should be banned

Congratulations and a belated Happy New Year to ALL who achieved their goals in 2013.
My own target of 5000 miles fell short by 200 miles - due to bad weather prior to Christmas.

(Not managed to get out so far this year for the same reason)

Hoping to do 50 miles on Sunday the 5th towards achieving the same target in 2014 :D

This thread and data base helped me hit 5000 miles in 2012 and 7000 in 2013.

Hopefully I can hit 8000 this year.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
