My sons first 700c road bike

These custom builds are becoming a bit of a habit!
Here is my son's first 700c road bike (he has been on smaller wheeled bikes before this one). Based on a 41cm Ridley Icarus frame, the aim was to produce something that was very light (as there is nothing of him!) but didn't break the bank. Nearly everything here is either off eBay or the spares bin, with only a few things brand new.
The bike has been stored for a little while until he grew into it. He now *just* fits it (angle of the photo of him standing behind it makes him look smaller against it than he is), and it got ridden for the first time on Sunday. I'm told it is 'awesome' and 'everything feels so easy'.

Thanks! He picked the colour scheme based on the wheels. As I had lots of time to build this I could wait for things like the QRs to come from China (£4.50 inc postage off eBay!).Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0 -
Very nice!
Why no front shifter?0 -

Not needed as he is gear restricted when racing. He only needs the inner ring (36t) and why he has an unusual 14-25 rear cassette. The big ring is only on there to stop the chain from coming off.Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0 -

Great bike and one happy looking rider.
Costs really ramp up when they get older, 2 boys with mtb, cross, road, bmx and jump bikes!
Worth it though as they are both still riding and racing at 19 and 24.Cervelo R5

I totally agree. My two are only young but I would rather spend the money on these than games consoles etc. In this case my son paid some towards it, as his pocket money was mounting up and all he wanted were some nice shiny wheels! Bt he understands the value of it.Blogging about junior road bikes http://junior-road-bikes.tumblr.com0 -
