OK in follow up to my wheel thread that really didnt answer any of my thoughts but amused me im going on with forks now...

So when im sacked with my pile of cash going to bin my 2010 36Talas R and get some new forks, but testing forks is a tricky business compared to getting on a different bike! at the moment my list is like this

Rockshox Lyric Not sure on coil or air here but you can swap fairly easily between the 2
Marzocchi 55 not sure which version here either... but they get good reveiws
and of course there is Fox 36's Talas/Float though part of me is put of by the awful performance of my R

Give me some opinions and abuse please!

  • Surprised they kept you this long.
  • Yup me too,

Did offer piles of cash for me to go to London withe role, but i decided i'd rather have nasty things done to me living in a box in Newport than live in that hell hole ;)
  • I've got Fox van rc2 36's.

Spot on, cant fault them. Buy them so you can look as awesome as me (almost)

So you turned down a pay rise and the chance to live in the centre of the known universe (with easy access to Welshland down the M4) in favour of being on the dole in Newport......

I would keep your current forks as you'll need the cash before too long

Indeed, as the centre of the known universe is a shite tip in my veiw, and here i can just fall out of the office and onto the trails normally. I hate London and to be honestly i dislike most Londoners really an odd bread.

Why live in the centre of the known universe when you can live in the armpit of the known universe, eh?

As I said in my thread, I wouldn't let 15mm put you off the Pikes. They'll still be plenty stiff ;)

If you took the Pepsi Challenge on a set of 20mm Pikes (if they existed) and a 15mm set of Pikes I doubt most people could tell the difference.

Can't go wrong with Lyriks though ;)

  • see i'd disagree 15mm is a pointless size.. most forks ive tried, 15mm to QR i can't tell much diff but 20mm wooo that works

Could that be the fact most 20mm forks have bigger stanchions?

I don't think there were many "burly" 15mm forks until the new Pike came along.

What bike are they going on anyway?

Marzocchi 55 rc3 ti evo. Amazing fork, a little heavy but extremely well damped and very plush. Very stiff as well.
  • yeh tempted by it but if i get myself a bit of a DH toy im not against keeping hte dune a little light to pedal hmmm tough call

    Londoners really an odd bread.
Now Paul Rankin makes odd bread, Londoners loaf around but bread?

pretty slack steam roller of a bike if im honest.

Pretty similar to a 2013 Giant Reign then (67 degrees vs 67.5)?

If the 35mm stantions in the Boxxers that are on my (pretty slack steam roller of a bike) Mondraker Summum are stiff enough (which they are) then I'm pretty sure that the 35mm stantions on the Pikes are stiff enough (and they are).

Regarding the axle, perhaps I ride slowly but I think there's no difference (apart from in the rider's head) between 15mm and 20mm - and that's comparing 15mm Pikes on the Reign to 20mm Boxxers on the Summum.

I'll come down to the FOD and you can try my Reign with the Pikes on if you want, then make your decision about the axle.
  • IMO.. a tapered steerer makes more difference than a 9mm/15mm/20mm axle.

You should get some rigids

Yeah rigid and make it single speed.

Will your frame take 29" wheels?

Boxxers get a lot of stiffness from the dual crown, mine only have 1.125" straight steerer and are very stiff.
Tapered steerers reduce fore and aft flex. Bigger axles reduce twist in the fork. Dual crowns reduce both.
I would always take a bigger axle over tapered steerer. My old Pikes with a straight steerer and 20mm axle were stiffer than my revelations with tapered steerer and 15mm axle.

Actually sits slacker as the sus is designed to sit with a fair amount of sag.

You can do a direct comparison with Revelations. The weird thing is, 20mm isn't even heavy- there's grams in it at most, for most years that magazines were mindlessly saying "QR15 is light", it was actually the heavier option. Now you could make lighter hubs, in theory, but in practice companies mostly mate convertible hubs anyway so the 20mm ones were lighter too (smaller adaptors). Even Fox admit QR15 isn't up to scratch, they still use 20mm in their hard use forks.

But anyway. Yeah, Pikes. I really like my coil Lyriks, they really are just a smaller Boxxer, damping is superb... But they're hefty, and that's pretty hard to justify these days.

What's the X-Fusion, Slant? That's probably good, at roughly the price of one Fox top cap.
