Met a chap at the Dudes enduro last month, he'd bought a new 650b Five and figured that a £4000 bike would come with good tyres so just took it out and rode. 5 punctures and "more crashes than Evel Kneivel" on practice day so he drove up to fort william to find a better 650b tyre, and found... More ****ing useless Nobby Nics.
650b is good for people who find choice difficult It took me a while to decide which of my assorted 26 inch tyres to use, but any of the 4 or 5 I was considering would have been better than the best 650b option currently available. Quite crap that.
Aside from the obvious insanity of buying a five, what's wrong with the tyre choice for 650? Is there really something you would have over everything else that isn't available?A Flock of Birds

Plenty of tyre choice in 650b. A lot of small shops keep a limited range of tyres though.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

How many dualplies? Or hard-use wet tyres? Best options there are the Minion (extremely expensive and only available in one model, and not great once it gets properly muddy) and Hans Dampf (not very good). Oh or arguably the Dirty Dan but good luck buying one.
As soon as Conti get their finger out and make a Baron things'll look a lot better.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Need nothing more than Hans Dampfs and if for some bizarre reason you don't like those they have the magic mary or rock razor, so something for all conditions. Maxxis also have pretty much every tire they make in 650b too0 -
Yeah... Except you can't actually buy the Magic Mary in the UK. The Hans Dampf's cloggy and has no edges, and not all that grippy in loam or thick mud (oh, and in sticky compound it wears out like it's made of trifle). Decent enough allrounder I suppose but not a tyre I'd have on any of mine.
If it was me, I'd buy the Minions and suck up the drag and stupendous cost, but they're still not ideal.
Oh aye, there's an Onza Ibex on its way apparently but again, can't buy it.Uncompromising extremist0 -
I dont like Hans Dampfs, too big and heavy, not enough edge grip and disappearing nobbles. They stayed on my bike for about four rides before they went on ebay. Not at all impressed for nearly £90 a pair.
It's a shame Conti Rubber Queens and Barons aren't available in 650b.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
I don't mind change
as long as they don't stop selling my beloved 26" race kings0 -
Rubber Queens are now called Trail Kings to keep them in line with the rest of the Conti range

Rubber queens/trail kings are available in 650. I think barons aren't available as they might not be available in any size soon.A Flock of Birds

Also the Ibex is a lot like the dhr2. Neither of the new minions are particularly draggy and the dhr is now a great tyre. I may even try one on the front too. Crazy I know.A Flock of Birds

How did that work out for you when there was only 26 to choose from. Were you complaining then? All the gear, no idea and loving the smell of jealousy in the morning.

I'm intrigued by new things but I tend to let others try it first and then see how they like it.0
