Education should be the answer but it seems that drivers just don't care if they hit you off.
I ride 34 miles a day on a mix of urban and country roads and it's obvious that the safety of cyclists is a lower priority to most people than getting home quickly. Wearing more lights and high viz kit makes absolutely no difference.
Judging by what I see every day you would have to be retarded to ride on the road without a helmet.
It does seem to be hipster students on fixies who are most commonly not wearing helmets and the world could use a few less of them so maybe helmets shouldn't be compulsory.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Judging by what I see most days it seems drivers are scared sh*tless of cyclists on the back roads, they sit behind a cyclist at 10mph waiting before a 1/2 mile stretch is available for an overtake, and by overtake I mean on the otherside of the road and almost into the ditch kind of affair.
So many useless drivers are unable to judge the amount of width available on a road and that it's perfectly safe to overtake a cyclist in safety while other cars are coming the other way.0 -
I seem to get overtaken on the way in to blind bends or with about 2 inches space in to oncoming traffic.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

So the driver's supposed to go onto the wrong side of the road, through the hedge and into the adjoining field? I can't see that being very practical...0
