Numb toes after ride…

I am 53 and got into cycling 4 months ago. I do a moderate pace 30 km fitness ride 3 times a week. My average speed over the entire ride (including 3 or 4 lights) varys between 28.5 and 30.5 km/hr (depending on how motivated I feel that day). I find that, by the end of every ride, the toes in both my feet are numb (have gone to sleep). Is this something I should be worried about?

Ps. I currently ride a Giant Defy 1 with a Specialized Romin Pro saddle but it also happened with other saddles (such as the Specialized Romin Expert).

  • This is a problem I have had in the past. My current shoe/pedal setup seems to help. For a number of years had real trouble with a similar problem skiing and had a very good boot fit with custom made insoles which helped. Used the insoles in some Lakes I had for cycling and it definitely helped. I swapped to Fizik's and found that the arch support helps a lot but I think you may need to try different shoes etc. My problem is that I have high arches which collapse when weight is placed on the toes and then this pinches the nerve in the foot. Of course, your problem may stem from a different source.

For me, a larger pedal platform, coupled with shoes that supported me worked...

  • Hmmm…
My shoes might be the problem. I have entry level Look Easy pedals (which I like because of the large amount of float) and relatively cheap Exuster shoes.
  • It could be the position of your foot over the pedal axle. The perceived wisdom is to ensure the balls of the feet are directly over the axle but the usual caveat of us all being different still applies so there might be slight variation fore and aft.

Although I don't have any major issues with aching or numb feet I found that even off-the-shelf footbeds from somewhere like 2foot2 provided added relief.
