Dover District Council has said it will be using CCTV to monitor the artwork, on York Street, after it was defaced

The framed Girl With Balloon, one of the artist's best known works, was auctioned by Sotheby's in London.
The piece which shows a girl reaching towards a heart-shaped balloon was the final work sold at the auction. However, moments after the piece went under the hammer, the canvas passed through a shredder that was hidden inside the frame. Posting a picture of the moment on Instagram, Banksy wrote: "Going, going, gone..." The 2006 piece sold for £1.042m on Friday night.

Ha, have to laugh at that.
  • Brilliant.

As far as the ‘is it art’ argument goes, he/they is/are no Futura or Stash in the graffiti and street art world, but he/they certainly nailed the stencil style and managed to cop a major break. He/they are taking huge wads of money off rich buyers who couldn’t give a toss about the actual piece - so kudos for that.

    So clever. Brilliant.

  • I reckon the bidder was Banksy and because the piece was destroyed the lot can't be sold. I also think Sotheby's must have been in on it because there's no way they didn't know that there was a shredder built in. They will have had to authenticate the work for the sale.

It's probably worth even more now as well :-)

    Hype at its best.

I bet Leonardo da Caprio wishes he'd thought of that. He probably invented the shredder, too.

Do they always mount the art on the wall when they sell it? And wire it in.

Good publicity stunt though, very mission impossible/inspector gadget.

I like the looks on the faces in that video. I read that one art dealer estimated that the value of the work post-shredding had increased by at least 50%.

    ^ Precisely.

The number of significant individuals both historical and present that the spell checker does not recognise, shows a) how badly designed/programmed it is and b) how North American Centric it is too.

Banksy is a genius artist because he is relevant and conscious. Our opinions of him and his work and all art are suprisingly and paradoxically irrelevant. I don't mean that we should suppress our ideas and emotions, but looking at art through an objective lens gives us a better understanding of it. Bad art is mostly non-existent because we don't talk about it, or go and experience it, so it falls from consciousness. Though it may re-emerge as good art under some circumstances. I advise all Banksy haters to not talk about him!
