The cost annoys me and I think a lot of it is due to the manufacturers pushing the alternative wheel sizes. In time this should die off a bit but I expect it will be several years.
26" wheels were/are widespread due to their mainstream use mass production is used and the cost to consumer is reduced. Technology can still improve strength and reduce component weight; the riders with the free disposable income can buy the latest top gear, and that allows the masses to get improved product at reasonable cost in the subsequent years as the best advances succeed.
But due to alternative wheel sizes, sprung and unsprung weight increase as does mechanical stress on the components. To combat this stronger components are required (usually without increasing weight).
Companies work on these issues and either stop development of 26" which will eventually lead to increases in the future as 26" parts become fewer. They may increase development working on all sizes and the cost is passed to the consumer. In all cases as more parts of a bespoke nature are manufactured costs rise until new standards are set and mass production returns.
Having one alternative to 26" would not be bad as technology should progress and try alternatives but having a 3 way split is too much, the sooner one option is dropped the better in my view.
Sorry this was a bit long winded but your documentary could follow these lines.0 -

Erm price, weather - I know people say there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing etc. but that's just b0llocks, if you tootle about your trails at 2mph then no, the rain doesnt effect you - but when you're trying to rail a berm as fast as possible as you need to hit a jump out of it, it's not worth it. Not to mention wind. Yeah price and weather are what annoy me about mtbing.0

What about something about the demise of the MTB club ride... when I was first ridnig 20 years ago, there were loads of MTB clubs (almost every LBS ran a club/amateur race team), and they were well attended, most of which would spend their time touring local bridleways in their areas with the odd trip to somewhere a bit special. This meant minimal driving to destinations, and good widespread use of bridleways. Now it seems that mtbers only cycle with their mates, and clubs are relatively less supported (unless they happen to have a trail centre in their area). this means more people are travelling with bikes on/in cars to trail centres, and bridleways are now getting neglected despite them providing some fantastic riding opportunities - it all seems to be about riding man-made trails these days.Bikes:
