Building this to replace my 13 year old commute bike. The ride to work can be mostly off road; I found myself roading it in the winter to cut down on drivetrain maintenance. Going for a simple single speed/rigid fork bike. Building it slow time and seeing what components money will allow each month. Should be complete come Spring 2014.....

August saw the frame arrive, got the forks and steering bits in Sept.

Should've gone for the 44.5cm forks rather than the 42.5cm. Lack of patience and wanting progress saw me sticking to the original forks. Even with 4cm of spacing the bars are 4.5cm lower than my old bike. Will see how it rides. A set of riser bars may help.

  • This is an idea of the ride height. Wheels are off my other bike, just put them on to see roughly what it will look like. I'm hoping to get new wheels next pay packet. The plan is to get a rolling stock by Christmas. All the drivetrain bits will be from Velosolo. I'm not going big with the budget!

  • Will keep an eye on this one, ive only just finished my Inbred SS last month and i love it tbh, just a shame its broken after i got hit on it last Sunday. I see you mentioned the height of the front due to the forks, i only noticed this after i built it up so i now have a big riser bar on to solve it and it rides fine now.
  • Ouch Motley! hope all is well. As a typical MTBer I'll ask whats wrong with the bike!

Even though I like the flat bars I should've gone for something wider (they are 600mm) and maybe gone riser. I don't like the aesthetics of upright bar end extensions like we had back in the 90s I do like the riding position they offer.

  • All is well now, still abit black and blue myself but more importantly the bike is back to riding condition. The damage was a rather buckled wheel, which is now fixed, a bent brake level and scratches on the bar ends and pedals. Got off quite lightly tbh, i took more of the impact and saved the bike luckierly

Wheels arrived yesterday. Doubt much more will get done this year with the financial vortex that is Christmas not too many pay packets away....

Have weakened and bought all the drive-train parts from Velosolo. Gone for 34/16 gearing. This bike will be the commute bike and shorter distance XC. Works out at 55.25 gear inches which I think is the same as BMX gearing.

Just have the brakes, rotors, seat post/saddle to buy.

Now finished. Rode it home from work and all seems good. Have raised the saddle an inch from the below pics. Only gripe is the spacers on the freehub don't seem a snug fit, theres a bit of play accompanied by a rattle when I'm not pedalling....

  • Nice, it's bright innit!

And you can ditch that chain stay protector, it ain't needed on a SS!

  • I like it a lot!! I love those forks, I had the ones with the black crown and drop outs on my Whippet, great forks.
I'm going to build something similar once the right frame crops up second hand (having to do a proper budget build as I'm saving to get married)
