Are you doing anything different this winter?

I think I've turned into a bit of a fair weather rider. Now that I have a specific bike for winter and lots more winter clothing I'm gonna try to keep riding out doors in all but the worst weather conditions.

  • I've joined an Ashtanga Yoga class. Done two weeks so far and very pleased. It's a beginners class but we have done some very difficult poses that will need to be worked on. I didn't think it would be a problem cycling home after but the ride home is slow.
remember to keep pedalling in circles.
  • I'm going to shift from bibshorts and legwarmers to biblongs - the castelli ones I've bought appear to have a roubaix type lining for the legs 8)
All the gear, but no idea...
  • Yes, I've split a lot more logs, stacked them up and plan to use the wood burner more often

I thnk the training workouts and track league racing at the Glasgow Velodrome last winter were the foundation of the really good season I had in the road racing this year.

I'm off to Chiang Mai, Thailand for the winter. Great weather, awesome cycling and climbs that are as tough as anywhere in the world. I fully expect to be fitter come Spring than I am now following a summer cycling in Europe. Can barely wait! :)
  • Actually riding my bike this year and not drinking a couple of bottles of wine every fri/sat, then deciding in march i'm not fit so continuing the wine through to October :D

    1. Focus less on mileage, but make whatever rides I do more productive (or proper recovery, not some in-between junk miles that just tire me out).

    2. More walking in the hills. A change is as good as a rest and Shropshire & the Welsh border country is terrific walking territory.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

Bought some heavy training wheels. to put on the heavy winter bike. they work fine, the winter bikes seatpost doesn't! tried it on monday and the seating position is way out (or more comfortable dependant on your view). its certainly not aero!

regardless, i'll be trying to get up hills as fast or as hard as i can on this bike, knowing that when i get back on the fast bike, i'll be a bit quicker hopefully!
  • Going into hibernation
  • Going back to basics with the Maffetone method.

Have changed diet completely to a Paleo/Primal eating plan.

Did loadsa mileage last winter doing those stoopid strava challenges. Bored with that now and got a turbo set up so looking forward to some sweaty indoor stuff. Now I know what a major off is like, I'm becoming a fair weather rider...

more road riding. I usually drop into MTB stuff in the winter (no...I don't know why...) but I'm sick of jetwashing mud of the drive so this year....more road riding.
it looks a bit steep to me.....

  • Shorter hill work on wet and winterery days whilst hoping it stays dry more than its wet as I have a New TREK Domane 2.3 2014 edition (for my income a real treat). I kept my old steel heep of S"<t for the winter. I went out on the old one the other day and hate the thing. Still hill climbing will be easier when the spring comes on the lighter TREK.

I have adapted my PowerTap wheel to work on my old single speed so am planning lots of SS rides this winter as its so much fun to ride and will make dealing with the muck and crap much easier. Just need to get some clip on guards to fit and all will be well.
My other 'different' this winter is that I want to make sure I get 1-2 turbo sessions done on the TT bike every week and really focus on driving muscle adaptions to the TT position before next spring :D

I was thinking of having a go at that too. I'd love to have a go at a biathlon, although I'd probably be better at it if it involved riding around with a shotgun, with five clay pigeons every few miles.
