After appauling GB Geography (admitadly from the Irishman and the Dane) - what would be the highest MTF in the UK?

    Bealach Na Ba
Would be the biggest climb (627m vertical ascent from more or less sea level) but Glenshee at 670m is higher - the road winds up and down to that over a long distance though, the serious climb only gains 300m or so.

Hi short term lurker, first time poster. I think that Great Dun fell is actually longer and higher. It is the biggest climb in England by a country mile. Edit....it is steeper also.

See, that's a proper climb in anyone's books. It would be great if an MTF could be arranged there one year. The problem with that sort of climb though is always space at the top for all the caravan etc. and ensuring the road up doesn't get blocked by spectators cars.
  • Goddamit. My colleague came in for a chin wag just as Martin went on the attack with Quintana and Wiggins trying to shut him down.

    Bradders was pretty perky there

Great Dun Fell is a private road so no chance of spectators cars and debateable whether the caravan / team cars etc would be allowed up even if there were room at the top. It's classed as a bridleway almost to the top hence accessible to cyclists

Wow! I really shouldn't have all my skin right now! @HuonGenesys you always told me to sprint with my head up! Almost undid me today! Close!

I quite enjoyed that. Tuned in just as Martin and Quintana attacked. A fair bit going on. Brad under pressure for a bit. Break away working well. Unsure if it will all come back together. Cav wheel hopping to get the victory. Then that lovely Ms Medwell on the podium

Was out on my bike this morning scoping out a vantage spot on the 2nd 'KoM' of Stage 7 near Dorking. Im sure they'll fly up it, its near the start, and the stage is front loaded so won't be decisive I suppose.
  • What was the combativity cheese today?

Hopefully they'll have some of this for one of the stages:

OK OK it isn't local but...
    Correlation is not causation.

Coldharbour? I'm planning on milling around with some mates at the start up on Epsom racecourse, and then riding over to Guildford for the finish. Looking forward to it :)

My hopeful plan is to get over to Surrey Hills to watch them on Barhatch. Return home to watch them pass just up the road from where I live then jump on train to Guildford for the finale. I reckon I can just about do it looking at the schedule

Yea that's it! Coldharbour Lane, sometimes 'Boar Hill' on a map. Its not the best for spectators as the road is recessed with steep muddy banks on either side. Unsure of geology. I took a picture today, and may post it when the Stage 7 thread appears just for reference. Though I am fully aware that its small fry in the scheme of things. Its just a nice hill near me that I ride a bit.

I plan to see them come past there, then cycle back home, then get the train to Guildford also.

What was the combativity cheese today?
It was Gorwydd Caerphilly, which dispite it's name is made in mid west Wales, not Caerphilly (I expect true Caerphilly will get a run out tomorrow). It actually comes from the same village 'the only gay in the village' comes from in Little Britain.

The sponsors, Rouleur, do a spot the cheese competition each day where they invite people to identify the cheese.

MTF would be good on the great dunn fell. Very challenging climb with some steep ramps. Even by continental standards at the end of a stage it would be a Cat 1.

Todays stage was very enjoyable. There are more challenging climbs and routes in the area that could possibly be exploited in future editions if they decide to come back to N Wales

I'm disappointed, today the cheese should have been this (or at least one from the same company)

Really enjoyed that stage. Big break, the rest refusing or not needing to help the Sky guys with the chase. Attacks on the last climb. Break caught at the last moment, and a Cav win. Whats not not to like?
The Sky guys must be on there knees, three days of working on the front. They are absolute beasts. Respect.

This has possibly been posted already but I thought it was a pretty good insight in to how a team works: http://vimeo.com/74810172

I think any hope of having Great Dun Fell as a mountain top finish vanished when RCS failed to win the tender to organise the ToB. Would be epic though, hardest climb I've ever done with multiple sections of 20%+. Made Kirkstone Pass look like a speedbump!

Decent stage today but the climbs weren't really tough enough to break it up.

That's a brilliant wee video. I particularly like the footage from Honister.
