Belated reply, but I think I've narrowed it down to the following bikes, and will be buying one once Christmas is out of the way :-

    Whyte Suffolk - http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/product ... suffolk-14

    Planet X XLS - http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBP ... cross_bike

    Canyon Inflite 8.0 or 8.0S - http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/ser ... te-al.html

    Planet X Kaffenback - http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBP ... _road_bike

Ideally, I'd like the bike to come in at under 10kg, have at least Shimano 105, the widest range of gears I can get as I'm relatively unfit, so a compact front and 30+ tooth cassette would be nice, and full length mudguard fitting would be the icing on the cake! ;)

What would you recommend out of the 4 bikes? Cheers.

im also looking at building a disc bike up - primary purpose would be as a commuter/tourer - so it would need to be rack ready like the kaff or tripster
what wheels do these bikes use? i think the kaff uses a 29`er mtb wheel whereas others use road wheels,
when looking to buy a set of wheels where would I start looking? getting a bit confused about 130mm 135mm rear spacing as a lot of wheels dont spec this...
    i need more bikes

The Whyte and the Canyon look the tidiest.

Pretty much all disc bikes now run a 135mm rear hub. The exception I think is Eastway, who have made a right boo-boo by going 130mm.

Swaying towards the Whyte as it has the best brakes out of the 4 bikes, and I can also get it on 0% finance with a variable deposit if needs be, whereas the other 3 would be full payment upfront.

Have you considered a Rose? http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/bike/rose-pro-dx-cross-2000/aid:611965

I saw one on a sportive in the summer in the flesh and the build quality was very very good. This one weigh's in at 9.2kgs.

And another spanner in the works, lol!

    A workmate's just bought a Ridley X-Bow, custom built from a local bike shop - http://www.ridley-bikes.com/gb/en/bikes ... disc-1405b

They'll swap over any bits I don't want, i.e. bigger cassette, tyres, etc, and only charge the difference, and build it to almost any spec I want!

They'll also throw in a free basic bike fit which is probably a good idea, anyone have any opinions on the X-Bow versus the rest of the bikes here? Cheers.

Giant TCX SLR 2 looks a belter.

However does not have mudguard mounts / eyelets, same for the Planet X. You would have to fit raceblade xls or similar

The X-Bow is a thoroughbred aluminium cross racer (not a 'utility' bike dressed up a cross bike) so might translate to a pretty harsh ride on-road. Would be worth testing first.

Has anyone actually found somewhere with a Whyte Suffolk in stock ? I am trying to buy one, but can't find a 56cm anywhere.

not harsh at all. a lot more forgiving than my dolan preffisio and also lighter. Same geometry as the other ridley cross cross bikes, but has a curved fork.

There's a big 130 v 135 debate going on on some roadie forums - I have a 2012 Charge Filter which uses 130 rear spacing, was a slight pain trying to find a rear hub when putting together a new wheelset for it but got there eventually (Novatec). This year they've gone for 135 to simplify the sourcing of parts it seems - would have made my life slightly easier if it was 135 from the start, it's a cx/commuting bike so mtb hubs wouldn't be totally out of place. i thought about just squeezing a MTB hub in there but it just didn't sit right & the wheel would have to be re-dished a fair bit. Incidentally I also stuck on an inline post & slightly longer stem to make up for the slightly slacker angles compared to my old road bike.

Biggest apparent problem with 135mm rear spaced road frames is the narrow Q factor on the road crankset sometimes causes problems with rear shifting on a mtb spaced frame - some frames are pretty much incompatible with a standard crankset due to clearance issues with the extra 2.5mm of chainstay width on the drive side, which might annoy those who like that sort of thing (proper hardcore roadies) Also, if you have any heel scuffing on your chainstays, imagine them 2.5mm deeper.

Hub manufacturers' argument that "135mm builds a stronger wheel due to better spaced flanges so let's just use those & we'll shave down our existing MTB designs for the road" is a bit misleading as the difference on a road bike application would be pretty much un-noticeable & all the frame geometries/spacings are fine as it is, no need to re-engineer everything & create a "new standard" - or they could just design some road hub shells with disc mounts.

I love discs on road bikes & would do unspeakable things for a Salsa Colossal Ti (135mm rear btw) but there's a way to go yet before it's all standardised - plenty of bikes will easily use MTB hubs with no issues but on proper fast road bikes with short chainstays & narrow Q factor chainsets, I can see plenty of people wanting to keep 130mm rear spacing.

Back on topic - the Kaffenback & XLS look great value but maybe not the most roadie like, saying that neither of the four are road race bikes, depends on what you're used to I suppose, however if you're a bit unfit you're unlikely to want your nose on the front wheel all day... not really a bad choice amongst them.

    Enjoy whatever you go for!

Unfortunately that says "ready to order" not "in stock" - same story everywhere else I have looked.

Have you tried ringing any of them? I've been in touch with Cycle Surgery and Edinburgh Cycles, CS have 3 of the 54cm in warehouse stock and EC have 2 of the 54cm, not sure about the 56cm as I'm too short for that one, lol! :P
  • Also looking for the same sort of bike at around the £1000ish mark. I have been considering the following:

    Specialized Sectuer Sport Disc
    Specialized Secture Disc Elite
    Genesis Croix de Fer
    Whyte Suffolk

My worry with the Specialized Sport is the low group set (Sora) for the price (£1000) and the Avid BB5s (which I read are terrible, but I am assuming could be easily upgraded BB7s).

Ideally I would like as big a cassette as possible so 32 plus (I am used to a hybrid with mountain bike gearing and live on the Mendips so have a few hills - I dont use the Granny ring very often and do most riding on the big - 48 - chainring, so am assuming a compact chainset - 50/34, plus a 32/34 cassette would be suitable to get up most hills and give me a little more at the top end). I am assuming that most bike shops will swap out the standard cassette for something more suitable for me - but are there compatibility issues depending on the groupset?

My riding is mainly on road, but does include cycle trails (light gravel old railway lines etc) so I want something tough enough to deal with a range of surfaces - rather than an outright road bike. I tend to do 30 mile ish rides once a week and hoping to do longer rides on the weekend, with the possibility of some (very) light credit card touring - so needs to be able to take a rack and mudguards. This will be my only bike (although I will keep the Cube Hybrid in the family) so needs to be a jack of all trades.

    Any help/suggestions welcome

Genesis CDF or Tifosi CK6 (disc brake cross bike for less than £900). The CK6 is sora euipped and I am awaiting the first stock this month and look forward to a test ride. The brakes are Tekro Lyra so they should be O.K. The CDF are pretty nice bikes too but after having to set a CDF up after it was delivered by mail order to a customer it do not look well put together. He rode for 100 miles and came in with a long list of problems. All problems were sortable but the front brake (BB7) do not feel right, rotor was bent so it had to be change, wheels were buckled, gears not set up at all in all really shoddy. In fact after doing my best with the front brake it still did not feel right, maybe the mounts need facing off but the customer told me not to go that far with it.

  • As a fan of Canyon I like the look of the Infinite AL as a winter bike but is there a pannier rack that would work with bosses mounted partway up the seatstays and/or fork?

Has anybody rode the new Giant alu cross bike with discs at £999? Comes with 105 and Tektro hydraulic discs. Seen it in the Edinburgh Bike Coop catalogue that came through the door, I know it won't suit all as its a proper cross racer with no rack or mudguard mounts.
  • Why not the Synapse Ultegra Disc? £1399 is in budget? If not, the 105 is £1099

One of those could well be my next bike. The only thing that I dislike about road cycling (coming from a mountain bike) is the rubbish brakes, which turn non-existent in the wet.
  • Looks like a nice bike (the synapse) and I'm considering it as a winter bike. Anyone tried one or got a link to a review? Is have thought it would be a popular option given the price and spec, though not sure how good the frame is at that price.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Condor Bivio X - its a great bike. Interesting they have set the rear spacing at 132.5 so you can "jam" in a 135 or squeeze up a 130 - I've been running 135 without issue.

Again - Condor can spec it up for you how you want it, will fit it for you etc etc...

Orbea Avant M30d is currently tempting me, only thing stopping me is wondering what's just about to be released from competitors.
