Hi all

Over the summer I've started to get sharp pain behind my knee cap. Dr google has diagnosed this as patellar tendonitis.

I'm going to go and see a physio in the next few weeks hopefully, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone has any experience of this and how you over came it.

I've had a bike fit, which hasn't been a fantastic success , plan on trying somewhere else.

Have also eased up on miles but do still get the pain

Rest and more rest i suspect, but it's not always easy is it :-)

  • If its behind the knee cap it's unlikely to be tendinitis, more chondromalacia patella. Although its difficult to diagnose on symptoms alone.

You have tendons above and below your knee cap which attach onto your patella, any issues with these will more than likely manifest themselves superficially rather than deep within the joint or behind the knee cap. Typically with tendinitis, you may have a creaking type sensation called crepitus and symptoms usually reduce with activity only to flair up after stopping.

Unless you're medically trained I'd avoid using the internet to self diagnose and get yourself to a physio or sports therapist to do a proper examination. That way you'll save yourself a lot of hassle and get your condition sorted sooner rather than later.
  • A good old sports massage to the quads could go a long way too,

  • Yeah, all good advice...many thanks

Would you say I should go to any old physiology or try find one who specialises in cycling/knee related issues...?
  • get a sports massage, tell them your symptoms and see how you get on afterwards
