Vuelta Stage 19 *Spoiler*
Stage 19 is under way, live coverage starts in just over an hour:
Profile:
Final KMs:
GC Standings:
ITA 1 NIBALI, Vincenzo (ASTANA PRO TEAM) 73:39:35
USA 2 HORNER, Christopher (RADIOSHACK LEOPARD) + 3
ESP 3 VALVERDE BELMONTE, Alejandro (MOVISTAR TEAM) + 1:09
ESP 4 RODRIGUEZ OLIVER, Joaquin (KATUSHA) + 2:24
IRL 5 ROCHE, Nicolas (SAXO-TINKOFF) + 3:43
ITA 6 POZZOVIVO, Domenico (AG2R LA MONDIALE) + 5:44
FRA 7 PINOT, Thibaut (FDJ) + 6:14
CZE 8 KONIG, Leopold (NETAPP - ENDURA) + 6:35
ESP 9 SANCHEZ GONZALEZ, Samuel (EUSKALTEL EUSKADI) + 7:51
EST 10 KANGERT, Tanel (ASTANA PRO TEAM) + 11:10
Looks likely to be another a day for a breakaway rider to win the stage.
With the Angliru coming up in Stage 20, are we likely to see the GC contenders keeping their powder dry for tomorrow? Although with another uphill finish today, Horner could easily take the race lead if he can gap Nibali.

Horner won't want to go into the last stage needing to drop Nibs, and he seems to be able to pull out time on quite shallow slopes so I can see fireworks...
Movistar might drag the break back as this looks tailor made for Valverde bonus seconds...___________________

At 50 km to go, Preidler and EBH 3 mins ahead of the peloton.
Inbetween a group of 7 riders: Grivko, Wyss, Arroyo (maybe trying to make up for dropping from 12th to 14th in the GC yesterday), Edet (trying to increase his lead in the mountain classification), Mori, Voss and Valls (trying to achieve anything for his decimated team – there are only 3 Vacansoleil riders left in the race because Hoogerland pulled up today after 75 km)0 -

ES talking about smallest GT winning margin.
Does anyone know what the actual riding times of Nibs & Horner are without time bonuses?0 -

If I recall correctly, Horner has two stage wins and a third place. Nibali's only Top 3 finishes are two second places. Assuming neither has placed on intermediate sprints, Horner has gained an extra 12 seconds on Nibali through "bonifications" ((10+10+4) - (6+6)).0 -
Looks like its going to be an interesting finish. You would expect it all to come back and some of the GC guys to be fighting it out for the bonus seconds.0

-
Approaching the steeper part of the climb now with 3km to go, gap coming down quite quickly. All setting up for a GC skirmish at the finish.0

Roche has a dig0
-
But J-Rod / Purito / Rodrigues has a bigger one0
-
Textbook Purito. Looks like a gap of 6 seconds between Horner and Nibali0

J-Rod takes it0

Horner drops Nibs for 6 seconds0

Nibali looks so vulnerable, now. Could end up 4th.Mikey23 wrote:What's with the Horner hate?

Difficult to put finger on where to start, but it's like my dislike of Justin Beiber or Celine Dion or Miley Cyrus. Just don't like him.0 -
The blog in the link below is quite interesting considering it was written on 8 August

Maybe Horner has been training by doing this. It would certainly make climbing hills seem easy. Apparently he gave this guy a lift for 2km (it was a few years ago mind)

Konig up into 7th position and is being consistent - every chance of taking Pozzo in 6th - which, for me, would be one of the results of the Vuelta....http://www.georgesfoundation.org

Another great final! Happy for Rodriguez, that attack was marvellous.0

Good job JRod. Wish you had found some similar form earlier. All shaping up for an exciting day tomorrow. I agree with Blazing - could be a disaster tomorrow for Nibali.dsoutar wrote:Blazing Saddles wrote:Nibali looks so vulnerable, now. Could end up 4th.Mikey23 wrote:What's with the Horner hate?

I see Contador is the king of the Angliru. Heavyweight.Contador is the Greatest0 -
I get it now
So he might be performing above his expected level therefore he's doping... Or he might not
He might be a talented rider who is getting his change late in his career because there is a more level playing field...
Or he might not
And anyone who performs above himself has got to be doping innit
And he smiles...
And he's 41
And he's American unlike the gallant wiggins and Froome so doesn't get a free pass
And he looks a bit weird and unfashionable
As the article concludes, if you have a prob with that then its probably your problem
Apologies for the rant and probably in the wrong place... Time for my afternoon meidication0 -
I don't recall Wiggins or Froome getting a free pass on this subject...
Horner also is widely linked as EPO using Rider 15 in the USADA report. He staunchly defended Lance. And his stance on doping since hasn't been as firm as one might like. Plus his answering of questions aroud his performance and linking it to be doping have been ambivalent. That said, I don't think he has come under nearly the same scrutiny from the cycling journalists as Froome did...0 -
When was the last time a 41 year old won any sport (discounting darts, snooker and shagging your brother's missus)?0
