  • Ive got a version of these;

Progressive resistance, which you can also turn off (not mid ride as you need to swap roller around). Smooth, feels road like and works well with trainer road - boom.
  • I cant spend £200 dabs i`m afraid.£150 is the max i can allow. And if i can get one lower then all the better.

The trouble is Christmas is not far away and the kids will soon be chewing their way through the Argos catalogue and the money will be needed there so i need to watch the pennies.

If you get a turbo you have no option other than to pedal, if you try and freewheel you stop.

Not if you have a flywheel.

Anyway, the length this thread has got and not one person has spoken about focusing on your goals or the reasons you are on the indoor trainer! If that doesn't motivate you then perhaps you're wasting your time?
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

I find it difficult to get motivated to ride on a turbo. It is incredibly boring or extremely hardwork (if it's hard then you haven't got the mind to be bored!).
Also, whilst in a recovery interval it's tempting to just stop and get off - especially if you're not achieving your targets.
So that's two reasons why I prefer to carry on riding for the winter - if I get tired then I can take in the scenery and I can't just stop - I've got to get home first.

For me to use a turbo I'm going to have to have some serious words with myself, ensure I've got something to distract me during the recovery sessions and set some realistic targets .... hell - I'll just get back on the road! ;)
  • @slowbike... rollers are less boring and you have to concentrate (or fall off!). it can be useful for the nastiest of weather days. but yes, turbos etc can be boring! (a good training routine can help)

You don't have to spend a lot on a turbo to get a good work out.Mine last winter was £60 off ebay new and was just a basic turbo. No adjustment on handle bars, you just wind the roller harder on the tyre for more resistance and use bike gears.Have to say I found it more than enough to get a hard work out. This year I have tacx rollers as well, but no wish to upgrade the turbo as it still can give more than I can take.
So don,t worry about having to spend X amount, spend what you can and also get a fan.
Sufferfest dvd,s are good and you can play them on pc or lappy and train to them for a bit of structure.

I got myself a turbo last week. Now have the ANT+ stick (thanks' to guys on here for advice sorting that one :) ) and just joined TrainerRoad. Hoping to do the threshold test later today and then consider which programme to follow.
All new to me but being unable to ride outside atm due to a shoulder op I have been told I can now use the turbo. Have to do something or else I will be a mess by the time I'm allowed out again and I wasn't ever so fit before the op!
Problem for me is once the shoulder settles down in a couple of months or so, the other one is going to be operated on so turbo it is for a while for me
  • I think I need an ant+ stick to make my edge 500, HR strap and cadence sensor talk to my laptop... Any advice on which one?!

    Got mine from Wiggle.
To pair with a Garmin GSC10 and Garmin HRM strap.
    Suunto movestick mini.

On the trainer you don't need to use the Edge 500. It works with the HR strap +speed and cadence sensor without the need to use the Garmin computer.
There are other Ant+ sticks available. See this thread for details.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thank you
  • iv recently bought a second hand elite mag turbo trainer for the winter months, yes I found it boring and extremely sweaty, so I got myself a fan and put some films on my ipad, bored no more, one thing about an exercise bike is that I would prefer to stick to my road bike as on an excercise bike the position would be completely different from what your used to, which in turn means you'll be using different muscle fibers which may cause issues

Bad weather has arrived, summer bike packed away... Out comes the turbo with the work horse commuter bike. This has been a fun thread to read ahead of jumping back on the turbo of hell.

I find it extremely mundane, will use whilst watching last series of
Breaking Bad to get base miles (and bit of of interval) unless I can hit the road.
  • Another vote here for the Suunto Movestick Mini - paired with Elite Novo Force and Garmin 510

A fan is a wise investment too if you don't already have one

Of these two turbos which one would be the better,i only wanted to spend about £100 but may go that little bit extra for the right one,and these two seem to be well regarded.

Or,as i mentioned earlier how about the Decathlon ones at £100?

I do like the idea of `free` rolling though, like on a road bike.
You're on a trainer to train. Free rolling isn't doing any training, is it?

I bought a cheap Tacx last year as my first trainer. I think it was about £75 from bikediscount.de. It got me through the winter and helped me make some significant gains. Knowing that I'll use one again this year I've sold that for £60 and bought a more expensive Kurt Kintetic one, £15 for 5 months of use is pretty good value. So I suggest that you buy a cheaper one and then upgrade if you use it.

Ok,firstly thanks everyone for your help and advice.

Yesterday i went and bought this from Decathlon.Only just set it up and had a quick blast in the living room before i put it in the garage.I have to say it is very quiet,i was expecting it to be louder but am pleasantly surprised.

Now i am torn on whether to get a rear wheel and turbo tyre or to get another bike entirely, that would save me setting it up all the time,i could just leave the bike permanently on the turbo. What would you guys do?

I have the same turbo and have a bike just for turbo use set up on it permanently. The turbo is used year round and as you say is pretty quiet.
  • That looks pretty good Davdandy, I might be tempted.

I new at this and planned to carry on riding through winter - when it's not raining.

But seeing how dirty my bike gets at the moment is depressing. I'm sure riding in the dining room will keep my bike cleaner.

I was more or less set on getting some rollers but came across the tacx i-vortex at wiggle for £380 with the VR software. Bit more than I wanted to spend but at that price is it worth a go? Anybody got any experience of the vortex model?
