I have been cycling all year but the last two rides i have been getting cramp in my left leg, inner thigh and back of the knee. Two things have changed, firstly i bought a new pair of shoes,a pair of Shimano r088,which fit beautifully i might add.The cleats are straight and my foot is parallel with the bike,my right leg is fine by the way.

The other thing is i ever so slightly raised my saddle, only an inch or so.

One of these things need adjusting, but would one inch on the saddle give me this much grief,as for the shoes, they seem fine but what do you think?

'Only an inch or so'! I would say that altering a saddle height that you are accustomed to by more than a couple of mm at a time is asking for problems!

An inch saddle rise seems a big rise in one go, put it back to where it was and raise it in about 2 or 3mm increments. It may or may not be the cause but worth a try.
  • I`ll give it try chaps,thanks.

+1 - change saddle position with no more than 5mm at a time is preferable. If you were already a bit too high you will be well too high now !!

Look up ways of setting your saddle height. Making alterations to the height can stress muscles differently from what they are used too and may cause cramping. Another thing you can do is stretching exercises. The last time I advised a rider to raise his saddle by that amount ( 1 inch and more) was because he looked like a circus monkey.

If you want to be a strong rider you have to do strong things.
However if you train like a cart horse you'll race like one.

    Has anyone else tried this?

I played around with my riding position some time ago, I haven't changed anything for about a year, according to this guide my seat is 1.5-2cm too high.

I have lowered it for my next ride, just wondered if anyone else had any views?

    Cheers.

Remember it's a guide, I used it as did a friend of mine and it was fine but I still tweaked it a bit, moved mine up about 5mm
