They're not really statements, even though they might be the reasons why you wear one. Is it instantly recognizable as an expensive watch?Specialized Roubaix Elite 2015

Expense shouldn't matter, who buys a watch because it costs a lot ?
Maybe branding brainwashes better for the expensive watches (or any item as they have more funds to brainwash us with).
I think however that there will always be a link between expense and demand simply because demand drive cost but it doesn't make an item better as my earlier statements confirmed.Living MY dream.0 -

I agree with the "shouldn't matter" bit. The answer to "who buys a watch because it costs a lot ?" is probably not many people. If you asked "who buys a watch because it looks like it costs a lot ?" (or because it obviously costs a lot), the answer probably takes in a big chunk of the customer base for similar overpriced trinkets. Not all of them, I'm sure. But it could well be most of themSpecialized Roubaix Elite 2015

Wearing a fancy watch is fine but will most likely be lost on the majority of the population. At interview stage it only matters if the interviewer is a watch person as well, if they arent then it is of no relevance or benefit to the process. Actually wearing a watch full stop will have little bearing on any interview (unless perhaps you are going for a refereeing job).Life isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.0

Would you give a job to a salesman who wears a cheap plastic watch ?

If he was the right person for the job absolutely. Whilst I don't disagree that a nice watch is nice thing to have the correct standpoint should be that you employ the sales person because they are hungry to achieve success and aspire to having a nice watch. As mentioned it is lost on the majority of the population and if you draw attention to it and then mention that it cost x amount in today's market there is a good chance many people will think you a little shallow. Personally I'd look into their employment history and see who could actually sell stuff0 -
So is there a kind of secret society watch comparison thingy going on, rather like freemasonry?
I remember there were a couple of jobs I felt I should have got but was overlooked... Perhaps it's because I wasn't suitably watched up?0 -
I think my was missed....
And, like I said earlier, ive made mistakes in employing people which is why I no longer get involved.Living MY dream.0 -
I suppose you had an office/factory (delete as appt) full of people with cool watches?0

How do you tell someone they didn't get the job because they have the wrong watch?Life isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.0

Mine was intended with a smiley too...
Having a nagging feeling though that I've become one of life's losers because I didn't have a suitable watch... And it's too late to do anything about it now0 -
@dodgy, actually a few of them do, but not all.
@simonhead, I dont do HR.
@mikey23 I doubt it. (on both points).Living MY dream.0 -
sod it. I need to get a decent watch. I'd like an automatic (is that a good choice?) I'd like it to be waterproof, I'd like it to have a stopwatch facility if possible and to have a yellow dial. Budget approx. £200-£300. Any ideas?0

Ironically my fake Rolex that cost £40 in Thailand keeps fantastic time. And it looks pretty damn genuine too!0

Well I'm going to step in on VTech's side here...
A) Smart watches - Personally I'd buy one for my housemate/sister/mother and other female friend/acquaintance so that they answer their ffffffflipping phones when they re in their handbags!!!. Second, From the images I ve seen I don't think they look too bad and if the prices I ve seen (100-150) are correct - big if - then they re not exactly a major purchase (says the guy who spent Eur 70 on a FD over the weekend)
Appearance. I agree with the rest of you but I think VTech is right. Before I moved over to NL (which is a whole other clothing debate), I used to work in a nice set of smart jeans, a clean ironed shirt, a good wool jumper if necessary and a clean set of walking trainer type things (you know...Merrel/Salomon sort of thang). I don't wear a watch because I lose/break the bloody things all the time and am usually close enough to a computer/phone to see the time
Now, there was a guy who used to come to work in a dirty, crumpled suit, with filthy, albeit smart leather shoes on, unironed/unwashed shirts...and probably an expensive watch. I was told many times that I looked significantly less "smart" than him, just because he was wearing a suit and I wasnt, even though to me he looked like he'd been dragged through a hedge backwards.
It sucks but VTech is right, there are people who think that people are "better" because they are wearing a suit (even a dirty one), smart shoes (even scuffed and muddy ones) and a posh watch (one of them is called frenchfighter and he lives in cave in ProRace). Because of this, when I got to an interview I have to arse around putting suits, shoes and watches on because there is a very decent chance that the other guy in the room thinks like that - wrong as he may be)
C) Using my dear old man as an example, Like VTech he always wanted a posh watch (Omega for him) so for his 50th he got one. He treasures it and wears it out with his smartest clothes (he does actually have some idea how to look smart) and I don't think it says anything about him other than he's a guy that wanted the same watch his dad had. The rest of the time he wears a cheap one he got off of ebay. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, If you do, i would challenge you that unless you ride the cheapest Specialized Allez (or equivalent), you re being somewhat hypocritical...We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
