    My wife for a long time believed "The North" was an actual town on basis of seeing signs for it on the A1 and her parent using saying something like "oooh the North, you don't want to go there its cold and rainy"

    She also pronounced the H in Harrogate, much to everyone's amusement, when I first took her up North (thats not a euphamism btw)

    @ HH - Chester is two hours from Euston and provides instant access to the hills and valleys of North Wales. You could do a lot worse.
