Improved descending skills

  • "Keep looking where you want to go" is great advice. Try to stop overthinking it too.

I find pedalling as hard as I can downhill makes me feel a lot more in control than just rolling down.

Find a good hill without blind corners or other dangers, and keep riding down it so you get used to and hopefully start to feel more comfortable.

If I'm doing 30-40 plus I tend to glance behind me as I approach a corner - if it's all clear and nothing behind me I know I have a bit more road to play with and can take the corner a little faster without having to worry about hugging the curb incase someones tries to overtake me. Makes me feel more safe and comfortable.

You could try starting off on a less steep descent and then gradually moving on to steeper hills. If you feel safe flying down a 5% gradient, 6% should be fine too. After that, 7% will feel pretty comfortable and so on.
