Why doesn't the Alpine 160 attract the same levels of hatred as the Five? Or is the Five a "special" case?

I don't actually know. I've got nothing against orange bikes personally, just don't like the cost0 -

Agree, they're good bikes, solid frame, simple design but they are a rip off
The Five is much more common on UK trails than the alpine so I'd guess that's why
A lot of rent bikes are Fives so you have someone who should be riding a £80 Apollo on a huge Five and they do it no justice0 -

I'm with Welshkev on this though. I don't actually have anything against Orange 5s, or alpines, or anything else, apart from their insane cost. Sure, I'm no fan of the aesthetics, but that means nothing, everyone has their own tastes.0 -
What makes them worse than Santa Cruz or Yeti or any of the other overpriced brands?
The Five actually makes a GT Force look good value.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

For the record, I wholeheartedly agree that the new GT Force is massively overpriced. £4K for an SLX equipped bike. For real? :shock:0 -
I don't think orange bikes are THAT overpriced, there, I said it. Or at least by comparison to a lot of other brands.
The new alpine looks awesome I think, nicer looking and really good geometry. I'd love to have a test ride on one.0 -

My point is that the others dont recieve the same levels of hate. The Santa Cruz Bronson looks like terrible value and nothing special but people love that.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

But is it, or any other similar bike that bad value compared to the 5 though? Taking frame only into account, give or take £1-200 of a five, you could get any number of bikes, Bronson, intense tracer, pivot Mach 5, transition bandit... There's a big list. The thing with the five is you pay for the made in UK badge, which as far as I'm concerned given how good manufacturing abroad is these days, actually means you end up with a more expensive, but inferior piece of kit. If it cost a few hundred quid less, in line with a heckler or nukeproof mega then it'd be seen completely differently.0 -

Because you pay £1k extra for the awesome looks
But from what I've heard it's a monster of a bike, thinking about a custom build myself0 -

You can even get a yeti for the same price as an Orange0 -
You cam buy a whole decathlon for less than an orange frame.0

Is a Yeti any better than a Five? They look nicer but looks count for nothing when you're riding it.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I think discussing the bike is missing the point a bit, the whole issue about the five is about the people that buy them, the same way that in the past BMW 3 series drivers got stick - they weren't any more expensive than a lot of similar cars, and weren't especially bad but got a reputation for being driven by image conscious dicks and were they any better than a cheaper Mondeo? From my experience (limited to two people so not a wide sample) this stereotype was quite accurate, e.g. neighbour, never showed any interest in bikes, drove a Porsche Cayenne. Met him in the LBS wheeling out an orange five. This confirmed all my prejudices about him0

I holiday in France a lot, you always see rich families with loads of low end specialized, shite value compared to alternatives but shows that a name sells.
Personally I've only ever ridden a 5 pro, I really liked it and if I was in the market for that kind of bike I would consider the single pivot design, but buy one new? NFW.0 -

This is where people differ though, some are happy to ride a bike that looks shit, others aren't. If you're spending Orange/yeti etc kinda money, surely it should tick every single box; performance, looks, the best kit and all that jazz. For many, the five doesn't do that.0 -

I spent a pile of cash on my Scalp and really don't mind that its quite an ugly bike. Before that I had a Giant Reign X which was really fugly but a great ride. I like a bike to do what its designed to do and don't care what it looks like. They all look the same plastered in mud.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

I have to disagree, I quite like the look of the Scalp...
Either way, awesome bike0 -

I was just making the point that they're the same price, like Yeehaa said Yeti are typically expensive and considered "Boutique". They also have a very loyal following of awesome riders. Everything Orange does not.
At 575 frame and Five frame are literally the same price and the 575 has a better shock0 -
I think yetis are fugly bikes, (apart from to sb66). The 575 is especially awful to look at, and some of the, have really odd geometry... The older fives had much better geometry than some of the weird crap yeti used to make...
I still don't think fives are especially expensive, or heavy.0 -
Its the clique that goes with the Orange 5, seriously the number of all the gear no idea Orange 5 riders astounds me! If you dont know what I mean, ride Gisburn on a bank holiday.
The Orange Alpine doesn't have the same sort of following IMO.0 -
The all the gear no idea types at trail centres seem to be split 50/50 between Five's and Zesty'sTransition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

yes, but the main difference there is that the £3k carbon Zesty 514 has a miles miles miles better spec and is lighter* than the £3k Orange 5.

I'd say 50% Five 20% Zesty 30% Whyte0 -
To be honest I haven't been to a trail centre for a few years, I much prefer natural trails or downhill. But last time I went it was all Zesty's and Five's.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

If you ever go to cannock you will see how bad the Five situation is0 -
