Does anyone know of any indoor cycling centres in the north east please? I have heard about the velodrome in Manchester but thought I'd check for others before I book anything incase there are some more local.

If it's indoors you want, then Manchester is your nearest.
  • are you looking for an (indoor) velodrome, or somewhere (indoors) to do some other sort of indoor cycling (such as turbo sessions)?

  • I was looking for somewhere I could take my bike, I don't fancy spinning classes or anything like that. It could be somewhere with a track outdoors I guess but I was thinking more for the winter. We used to have a place called claireville in town that has half a dozen tracks in an oval shape but apparently the tracks are for running on and not biking on.

You couldn't take your own bike to Manchester anyway (unless it's a track bike). If improvement is what you are looking for, join up with a local club that provides coaching/training sessions.
  • Yup, if you're looking for indoor cycling you'll need a track bike (or you can rent one in Manchester). i *guess* there's some outdoor tracks nearer to you (but again you're at the mercy of the weather if that's what you're worried about).

There's a variety of decent clothing available to keep you dry and warm in the winter. and careful, selected use of a turbo trainer will keep your fitness up. rollers are good too.

Clairville did have a tarmac oval cycle track around the outside of the running track. Since this was a 400m running track the bike oval was big. Teesside Clarion used to do training nights there where you could borrow a bike.

As you infer, I think the facility has now closed due to council cutbacks. It certainly looked that way when I was past recently, judging by the length of the grass around the site.

I think you'll just have to get some decent winter gear and get out there, in combination with a trainer for home use. Maybe look into an MTB for winter use as well?

I've always thought of organising crits in a warehouse- say like racing on a go kart track. Anyone reckon this'd be a good idea (especially in winter) Would there be a demand for it?
