Rides 3 grand tours a year, outclimbed Sella to win a stage in the Giro, makes his own cycling shoes, is the unofficial IT support for the team buses on any tour.

Not to jinx it, but if you include the Vuelta, he's only 4 GTs off matching this guy's record - 9 GTs in a row: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marino_Lejarreta

Lejarreta did 10 in a row - '88 Tour de France followed by all three in 89-91.

And Hansen has already done 6 in a row, so he's 4 off anyway.

Well, despite how dodgy my figures are, I really hope he does it!

Without wishing to divert this thread overly:
    Marino Lejaretta
    1987
    Vuelta 34th
    Giro 4th
    Tour 10th

    1989
    Vuelta 20th
    Giro 10th
    Tour 5th

    1990
    Vuelta 55th
    Giro 7th
    Tour 5th

    1991
    Vuelta 3rd
    Giro 5th
    Tour 53rd

And this is when the Vuelta was run in late Apr-early May. In 1989, the races were run as follows:
    Vuelta: Apr 24 - May 15
    Giro: May 21 - June 11
    Tour: July 1 - July 23
Finishing in the top 20 in all 3 in 1989, with that schedule is some achievement.

Yes, but is there photographic evidence of him having a beer with fans during a race?

Good on ya, keep it up.

I second that. He comes from Cairns, my home town, and on the rare times he is home he comes out with the Saturday morning ride and is just one of the boys, easy to talk to and no airs and graces. A real ambassador for the sport.

He does seem like a good guy, although ‘suggests ideas about the exterior looks of shoes’ (which is what I understood he does) is far different from “makes his own cycling shoes” (as the OP wrote).

It's interesting to see what answers Hansen gave to the same questions in separate interviews he had, firstly about 2004, and then again in 2010.

Which is the most difficult climb?
    2004: The Kitzbühler Horn
By 2010, Hansen had changed his mind to saying the Lysa Hora. It's near where the the Czech/Polish borders come together.

Which fellow cyclists do you have most respect for?
    2004:Jens Voigt, Vino
    Who are your role models?
2004: Jens Voigt, Vino, Dr. Lothar Heinrich
By 2010, Hansen had changed to nominating Edwald Boassen-Hagen and Vicente Reynés as the fellow cyclists for whom he had most respect.

Dr. Lothar Heinrich was one of two doctors who admitted helping Telekom riders dope between 1995 and 2007.
I don’t know how or why Hansen would have encountered him in 2004, but he would have definitely met Heinrich by 2007, because by then Hansen had joined the Telekom successor team, T-Mobile, for which Heinrich still worked, until dismissed in mid-2007.

    What’s your attitude about doping?
2004: That’s a good question. I’m trying to see how far I can go clean, so far so good.
But it really gets to me when I notice a rider take something and then beat me. That’s unfair and ignoble because there are a few of us riding clean!

By 2010, Hansen favoured improvements in testing and keeping samples for 3 years for retro-testing. When then asked how he deals with fellow cyclists after their return from a doping suspension, Hansen answered, “That´s a hard question. For sure I wouldn’t invite them over for a BBQ lunch to congratulate them on their return. There are rules that should not be broken, I don’t break them. But in some ways I don't care what others do."

What are your best and worst characteristics?
2004: Best: I’m too nice and that gets taken advantage of. Worst: I’m honest (which is a bad thing sometimes)
He wasn't asked this in 2010, but it's probably still true.

In the 2010 interview, Hansen favoured banning rider/team radios, which I was glad to hear from a rider.

Definitely actually “makes his own cycling shoes”:

Perhaps not making them all by himself but certainly more than just suggesting ideas about the exterior!

I think he actually learnt how to lay the carbon didnt he? I believe that came from Inner Ring's blog.

He lives in the Czech Republic... hence probably the change in fav mountain.

He's also started his own company (http://www.hanseeno.com/index.php) which has a certain home grown quality about it... much like those shoes...

Here's hoping he does another hat-trick in 2014.

Does anyone have any front-on shots of him riding. Caught a glimpse of him yesterday and he seemed to be riding unusually narrow handlebars. Anyone?

There was a mini Hansen love-in on one of the other threads a month or so back ...

One of those guys who rides to the best of his ability and comes across as way less try hard than many of the other English speaking riders ... Sadly don't think he'll ever manage a big or GC win ... Would he do better on another team?

Great, he seems like a proper character, although I'm not a massive fan of some of his shoes aesthetically he must be a pretty clever bloke to do all that (He's trained as an engineer isn't he?)

Such a great guy. Saw a video where he swapped his bison with a spectators beer. He doesn't take himself to seriously but rides out of his skin!
