I think the point here is that's what it felt like to him. With bikes, it's all about what feels right for you, not anybody else.

I ride regularly with a group of about 30 riders, not often all at the same time mind, but only two of that group have the same bike.

Personally I'd rather have a discounted FS bike as an all rounder than a 29er hardtail. E.g. Anthem X4 26er discounted on Paul's cycles at the moment to £850! But that's not what the OP was looking for so I wouldn't suggest it.
    XC: Giant Anthem X
    Fun: Yeti SB66
Road: Litespeed C1, Cannondale Supersix Evo, Cervelo R5
    Trainer: Bianchi via Nirone
Hack: GT hardtail with Schwalbe City Jets

You should though, the X4 is a good suggestion for best all rounder under the 1k budget set.
Too many bikes, not all fully built.

A good 26er, with suited geometry and good suspension will blitz a medicre 650B or 700C. And vice versa.

Personally for me a 26er with big tyres for extra grip as an all rounder.

The Anthem is a surprisingly good all rounder. It doesn't feel at all like a xc race bike. It just feels like a fun mountain bike but also happens to be very easy to ride very fast.
