Pins and needles in my feet

Hi all

i've had my bike for about 6 weeks, its all going great but one thing is starting to annoy me. i'm riding with shimano clipless pedals and after i've done 10ish miles i start to get pretty intense pins and needles in my feet, localised to the area where my cleats are. i can unclip and shake it out but i' wondering if its the position of the cleats? or maybe my position on the bike? or just something i need to mtfu and get used to?

Any ideas?

P&N is basically caused by you cutting the circulation off so it might be that something is too tight. Could be cleat position but before you fiddle with them check the easier variable, are your shoes maybe too tight. . Loosen the straps a bit and if that doesn't work then move your cleats (forward probably). Or try bigger shoes ;)
If you buy it, they will come...

...up to you and say, you didn't want to buy one of them!!!

the shoes are actually very comfortable so i don't think its the size of them.

i'll try loosening them up, thanks.

Although cleat position may well be a factor, definitely loosen the straps on your shoes - I had the same problem when I first went clipless. Loosened straps following advice on here and problem solved. Even though the temptation is to ratchet them up so you feel like a stromtrooper, your SPD SL shoes do not need to be anything like as tight as your normal walking shoes.

hahaha that is exactly what i do.
  • Glad I read this, was just about to start fiddling with cleat positions on my right shoe but now I'll just try a looser fitting on the Velcro straps first.

Again here only after about 10km and only on the right
  • Not necessarily circulation. It could be nerve compression. It may be you have a condition such as Mortons Neuroma (not a particularly serious, albeit uncomfortable problem) which is aggravated by your foot position and footwear. If it is relieved as soon as you remove your foot from tight footwear there's a chance it could be that. See a Podiatrist for some advice if it persists.

Another +1 for adjusting straps, easier to keep the same set up once you get it sorted with ratchet straps, bit more difficult if you just have velcro to replicate the same fit each time you go out. 1 notch change on my Northwave's ratchet straps made a huge difference to my pins and needles issues.
