The way I found out about the 'secret nuclear warhead depot' on the M4, was when attending a meeting in Hampshire a few years back.
The M4 in the discussed area was closed due to a 'police incident' according to radio, and the traffic chaos was incredible. Arrived at meeting late, explaining the reason. Only to be told by the chair that it was most likely due to a security breach at the munitions depot. Also went on to state that there is no restricted airspace over the site, and that he had flown his microlight over it plenty of times.

Unlike Aldermarston, which holds the dubious honour of being the only nuclear weapons establishment I've ever photographed from the air (albeit from quite a way away at about 5,000ft).

That would be the SIS training base then?

Security there was dreadful. There are pictures on the net of people sat on racks of bombs inside the site that broke in in protest over the first Iraq war. The American security at the time didnt seem to know what to do so just let them get on with it.

    Love reading about this story.

Footnote to this story, though unrelated, is that an ex work colleague (retired pilot) told me that he frequently hears nigh time flights into Boscombe Down. And had also seen, one clear day a large stealth plane, not a B2 escorted by 4x F117s (stealth fighters) flying at high altitude over the surrounding ranges.

I also understand that during the first Gulf War, it was quite common to see US Army convoys leaving the area and heading West to a military docks facility in Cardiff area. The warheads were loaded onto supply ships bound for the Gulf.

Off at a slight tangent, but for those who're into that sort of stuff, Skunk Works by Ben Rich (the bloke who ran the place when they made the F117) is a worthwhile read. Now that should be a management text!

Very likely yeah. There were frequent convoys into RAF Fairford where the b52s were based. I remember watching some take off from the perimeter fence.. One of them lurched violently to the left and its wing tip was mm away from the Tarmac. Those few mm probably saved my life, as a fully bomb and fuel laden b52 crashing on takeoff less than a few hundred feet away wouldn't have been good! Heard later on the radio it sufferered an engine failure and made an emergency landing in France.

Its little known also that a factory on a small industrial estate in leafield near Corsham makes a lot of the ammunition for the RAF which was delivered straight to Welford for storage.

Also the old Hullavington site just of the M4 Chippenham junction is often used as a secure stop over for nuclear convoys. I had the fright of my life once travelling past, just coming up to the entrance and a swarm of black range rovers pour out in front of me followed by motorcycle outriders and heavily armed police. Then a huge convoy of trucks and landrovers, even a big breakdown wrecker truck pulled out. Not sure if it was training or the real thing, but I didn't fancy being stuck behind it, thankfully they turned off down the M4 and I went straight over the roundabout to Chippenham!

Night flights into Boscombe would not be unusual, given that it is home to the ETPS. I've always been skeptical of that story anyway - not least because of Boscombe's position. Easy viewing from the A303 or anywhere up on the ridge. Surrounded by active farmland on all sides, especially the approach. I couldn't think of a worse place to fly into if I was trying to keep something secret (apart from heathrow, maybe).

Somewhere like Macrihanish would have made much more sense for the black project stuff, although that's apparently closed now too.

Its also surprisingly easy to get onto the base at boscombe.
Many years a go I met up with a guy in Porton who had some aircraft bits for sale that I wanted. Turns out he worked at Boscombe and told me he had a garage full of stuff on site and did I want to see..

So after a short car journey, we got the gate and he had a chat with the guard and then we were both waved through. I could have been any body, no questions, checks, or anything.

The garage really was full of stuff too!! He gave me a machine gun cartridge ejection plate from a f-86 Sabre.. Super shiny.
  • Going back to the original question, everything looks completly normal for a UK motorway, the white van is sitting in the middle lane when there is a vacant nearside lane.
