Feeling very down today after having a nasty off yesterday which resulted in breaking my collar bone :(

How long can I expect it to take to heal?

Was thinking of saving up to get a Turbo trainer so I can use that once I've healed up a bit, Any info in which to go for? Cheers.

I was 4 months from breaking mine until returning to work (offshore). Broken in 2 places. Went a couple of cheapo holidays to Spain and built a new bike with the time off :-)

Had a silimar thing to you last year off a motorbike. I got really bad advice from Huddersfield general. It took me a year till i was back doing normal things and i still have massive amounts of muscle wastage. I spent the time researching it, all the issues etc and eventually refered myself to another doc.

    Advice.

    1. get seen by somone who knows what they are doing!
    2. Try and get it plated / pinned it will not heal straight. it will not be the same no matter what they tell you. Ive got a plate on mine and it sticks out a good 1.5" from my chest still!
    3. Start your diet now!
    4. get some protein shake preferably made with milk. it aided my recovery post opp a lot!
    5. rest for 2 weeks then start moving it again.

good luck fella. Tell them it effects your job and you dont get sick pay. More chance of them fixing it then. They will be happy for you to walk around with it broken for the rest of your life otherwise!

Broke my collar bone into 3 earlier this year snowboarding. I was lucky as it was an insurance job and cost wasn't an issue. The hospital plated it and I was back at work within 2 weeks of the accident despite being signed off for 4.

My shoulder felt weak for a while afterwards but I still managed to finish a high ropes course 6 weeks after I'd broken it.

It's not set completely straight, or at least it's not set at the same angle as my opposite shoulder. I also have a 5 inch scar and the plate is visible through the skin. It doesn't cause any problems (i.e. i have full mobility) but it does make some people squemish.

    Hope the recovery goes well...

I broke mine 3 days after you dan. My Lump is just like yours. 2 weeks in now and its still very awkward to do anything. i wanted it pinned to flatten it and stop it from moving but was told that unless it has pierced the skin they don't operate. £££ no doubt.

it creaks and moves with every little movement. can't see how its ever going to look right again. very annoyed about it all! TYPING WITH LEFT finger!!

bike escaped with just a scratched brake lever. we can keep each other posted with our recoveries :D

i was in the middle of nowhere with no phone... had to leave the bike and crawl back to civilisation and hail cars down...nightmare.

Hope you're learnt your lesson and carry a phone whilst out riding from now on!

From what I've read, if left to heal naturally like ours, you'll always have a weird bump there.

I go see the specialist on Monday, I Hope everything is ok with it. Wanna hopefully be back at work in a couple of week and riding again in 2 month. Fingers crossed.

Stopped taking painkillers (Codeine) the Tuesday after it happened and painwise it's fine. All the bone feels somewhat lined up and healing I think.

    Hope you recover well.

I like going out without any interference so no phones.

I'm still on the co codomol as they are great for sleepy poohs. Done all mine but wangled some more from a "friend". If I could just go to sleep for 2 months I would! I had an appointment with the fracture clinic a week after and the guy said it all looked good and just give it time. Good! It looks anything but good. Muscle wastage has well and truly set in. I'm a 7 day a week gym man and I'm wasting away!!! Feel depression setting in so I'm going to combine my pills with some Prozac. (Joke)
Seriously watching what I eating now.
I also broke 2 other bones that i can't remember the name of now. Only fortunate thing is I can have 6 months on full pay. Im thinking of going back next year now ;-)

How long are you using the sling for Dan?

I only use it now if I walk any distance (shop and back) so 8 days in it really.

Still got mine on although I keep waking up with it on the bedroom floor and laid flat starfish style. Been told to keep it on at all times until I've seen the specialist and to try sleeping whilst sat up.

I also, feel depressed. Hopefully I'll be back at work Monday afternoon/Tuesday on light duties (training the minions to do my job which they can't do after been there for twice as long as I have)

Good to see the Nhs giving consistent advise. I was told that I could take it off for bed and to take it off a few times during the day to avoid a dead elbow.

Last night was the worst nights sleep yet!

Can you feel yours moving at all? When i lay down the bone kinda clicks back in place and when I get up it pops up again. This I feel is never going to heal!

    So what did they do?

How much mobility have you got? Has the bump reduced at all?

Forgot to say that I also broke my scapula (shoulder blade) and seriously bruised a few ribs plus taking a layer of skin off my back at the same time.

They gave me another X-Ray seems as they didn't have the original... And told me to do some exercises.

Just arm extensions and so on. The swelling is all gone now, Doc said not much happens the first 3/4 week and after that it heals up fast. There is still a bump there and he said the bones are still slightly overlapped but they should settle but he did say my breaks are bad, Normally just a single break but mines broken in 2 places.

Going back in 4 weeks and will see what's what then.

Ok. I had the second lot of X-rays one week later. I didn't think about taking a pic of the X-rays but will when I go back in a month. Today is the easiest day yet. Not much pain at all. I know il always have a slightly unsightly lump where the bone overlaps but as long as I'm pain free and have the same movement As before il live with it. Looking in the mirror I still have good symmetry so that's not a consern. Mine splintered into 4 bits at the one brake that look like pillars holding it up. In hindesight I really should have got a figure of 8 harness and strapped myself in tight to flatten the brake in the bone. Too late now though. Good job I have VERY high bordom threshold.

    How's things dan?

How much movement have you got on your arm now?

Any pain still? Scale of 1/10

    How's the lump?

Hi pal, Seems to slowly be getting better. Been moving the arm a lot more, Taking the sling off every now and then to do some small movements. Pain is still 1/10 unless I move the arm too much or make any sudden movements like earlier on when I dropped the remote and went to catch it lol. Lump is still ugly and all over the place apart from when laid down in bed it drops right back down.

    Yourself?

Your experience with the lump is what I'm most interested in. Like you it only goes flat when I lay down and as soon as I get up it becomes more prominent. It's all very disconserting! I've not tried any movement yet as I'm conscious about my broken scapula as well and don't want to interrupt this as well. Will try and do something at week 4. Wouldn't wish this on anyone!

The thing that bothers me most is 1 month on and there a bit of bone overlapping the other by about 2 inches.

The doc I seen on Monday said to come back in 4 week and they'll re-assess it. As far as I know if it's like mine they operate. Gonna be hell on if when I go back, 2 month after the break, if they then decide to operate on it.

From what I've read anything over 15mm overlap is considered in need of surgical correction. They must know this at day one. They have seen the X-rays. It's a case of 2k opp for best result of £3 worth of medication and £10 sling. I guess mine is also overlapping hence the bump. No idea just how much though. How's your shoulder level now, is it sitting lower than the other still?

Shoulder level seems fine, Done my first day at work today but had to come home early due to pain and nog wanting to over do it so half days this week. Mine is overlapping at least an inch.

    Any desernable improvement?

I've got a lot of movement in the arm before any pain kicks in. I'm just concerned with how the bones feel, Still can feel them overlapping by about 2cm.

Gonna be majorly pissed off and gutted if they decide to operate when I next go (12th September) after all this time.

It's just so disconcerting isn't it. Good that you have reasonable movment though. I'm still really sore. The fact that I'm dealing with the shoulder blade brake as well is compounding things somewhat. Finally relented today and saw my DR and got some sleeping pills. I've averaged 1- 3 hours a night since I did this. No sleep is hindering the healing process. Fingers crossed that tonight I might be out for the count.

Does yours seem to be fusing at all? I'm still at the point where if i lay flat it goes flat and when I get up it moves again. The bruising is still coming out. Hoping I'm going to wake up and boom! It's all solid but that's just not how it happens. The Internet is a scary place to research these sort of things, there's so many horror stories. I have a fracture clinic appointment on the 3 rd making it 5 weeks since the injury. I'm half inclined to have the plate done private. Most sportsmen would have had it plated days after for best results. Nightmare!!
