Was a pretty fit 62 year old with asthma controlled by inhaler until I fell off my bike...
Now I have a badly broken clavicle at the distal end, broken ribs and a minor pneumo thorax. X rays today show that the shoulder won't heal on its own and there is ligament damage so I'm on standby for an op under general anaesthetic. My arms in a sling and I have difficulty moving. Because I have spent such a lot of time sitting I have pressure sores on my bottom and rubbing cortisone cream into it. I'm not active at the moment and taking loads of painkillers so my bowels are tending towards constipation so producing logs and shoving in glycerin suppositories. Can't sleep properly and can barely walk half a mile into town. Missed out completely on sunny weather and been stuck indoors watching Tdf and listening to cricket... Will be weeks until I get back on my bike and not even sure if I want to

Ta mate! Just had the dreaded phone call... Booked in for the op tomorrow am, so hopefully will be fixed up. The bonus is that the surgeon is the shoulder specialist, not the cleaner0

I have IgA Nephropathy, don't ask me what the hell that is, it seems that it's something to do with kidneys. Once a year I have to carry out a 24 hour urine test, very awkward and possibly a little antisocial as it means carting a 2 litre plastic bottle around for a day. The results are analysed and sent to a specialist in London. I have to then make an appointment to see him for what is at most a 10 minute consultation. The specialist always seems pleased to see me, presumably as it means that he can carry on collecting the £150 fee that he charges each time.0

There is an army of people like you all over the country. All the 2 litre bottles are collected up and the contents then sold as Budweiser.0 -
Consultant did draw an arrow on my arm pointing upwards at the shoulder in question! Op seems to have gone ok and back home now hurting like heck ... Will be off work for at least six weeks and no flipping cycling...0

... And a glycerin suppository has produced a result0

Hmmm, I think that what I produce is probably more alcoholic than Budweiser.0 -

Sounds like a chiropractorI'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0 -
Generall OK, nothing major. Dodgy shoulder frollowing an RTA was fixed 2 years ago, and all tickety boo.
But now got dodgy bollox following the 'snip last YEAR'. Can't do long club rides as I end up in agony for a week after. Due an op soon to remove my plumbing from my worse one, then another for the other one if it goes to plan. Never again ! :roll:0 -

Blimey ! And I feel a bit miffed because I've got a sore ankle tendon which could jeopardise an ultra run at the end of August. Hopefully it will be OK by then, but it's impacted on my training schedule.
I'm sure there's things I'm not aware of, but I feel for you guys.

The frustraiting thing for me is my form is spot on. I even bagged a few OFF ROAD KOM's with really dodgy bits shortly after the original op. I can commute at present and ride for upto an hour - so can still do 20-30 miles a day, but flip, the 3 club runs I've done in the last 6 months left me in agony. Certainly no Sportives.
Down side is the pain is bad off the bike. Only long rides make it worse. It's unfortunately a 'common' problem I have since been told - 1 in 10 men get long term pain issues. I'm more hissed off with the GP doing the operation as I asked him specifically as I was a keen cyclist if there were any 'problems'.
Can't complain too much. I'm A1 other than this, but it's incredibly frustraiting. I do feel for folk with longer term health issues.0 -
Quite from a wheelchair finisher in the cairns ironman... Don't let a small thing like a broken back get in your way. Was in a cycle lane and got hit by a truck from the rear. Puts my situation in perspective...0

Glad it's gone well. Road to recovery and all. I had the big 'arrow' on my shoulder.0 -
It just made me laugh when it happened! There is a sense of absurdity about the whole process... Just wish it was someone else and not me... But it could be worse0

Broke my back a couple of years ago. Still want the option to "opt out" of the pain/general dysfunction.
One eye (following fairly unpleasant damage) seems intent on scaring me.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0
