    Made a few changes to the bike today, changed the 70mm Thomson stem for a Burgtec Enduro 60mm stem. I have swapped the Maxxiss High Rollers for a Pair of Tubeless ready 2.25 Schwalbe Rocket Rons which have saved well over a pound in weight. Finally the Fox 36's I currently have fitted are needed for another project so in their place I have fitted a pair of Fox 34 CTD's 160mm travel with 15mm thru axle which along with the other changes bring the overall weight down to a touch over 26lbs. Will post some pics when I have taken some.

    Although the One-one Max wheelset seems strong and they are light, they are a tad narrow and with winter upon us I am going to fit some fatter rubber so I need a slightly wider wheelset so I have ordered a pair of black Easton Haven wheels which are a bit wider , stronger and a touch lighter. Also they are fuly UST compatible. Best of all the wheels are on offer for £328 a pair, only concession is that the rear wheel is either 135/142x12 but a simple adapter makes them qr compatible http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251304176704? ... 1439.l2649

    Here is a pic from yesterdays maiden voyage, took the bike for a dawdle around the Clayton Vale track. Bike was great, used the forks in 120mm mode for most of the ride only opening them up for any steep bits/ drops. I swapped the Tmars dropper post for a Ks Beam remote model with a SDG Formula FX I-beam saddle, I only swapped because I got such a good deal on the Ks post and SDG seat (£105 for both brand new !!!) Love the bike and can't wait to get it to some proper hills.

    Some new bits for the 456 as she has been ignored recently. I found the 711mm Haven bars a tad narrow compared to the Renthals on my Strive so in their place is a pair of Kinesis Strut 750mm carbon low risers, astonishingly light (167grams) for their length and seem plenty stiff. I also sharpened the steering and lost a bit of weight by going for a 45mm Funnduro stem. The rear qr has made way for a Pz Racing bolt on skewer to stiffen the back end a bit. Finally I have treated her to a set of red 203mm/180mm Superstar Alpine floating disc rotors as they are on offer and will add a bit of colour to the wheels. Pics to follow.

    Is that easy enough to remove when you get a puncture down Hully Gully again? Just unbolts with the pictured spanner instead of having a QR lever?

    Decided to go 1 x 10 on the 456. Rear cassette will be a 11/40t thanks to a Leonardi General Lee adaptor. On the chainset I will be running a 30t Blackspire mono veloce narrow/wide ring. I will replace the X0 grip shifters with a Sram doubletap flat bar shifter and Esi silicon grips. My rear longcage Sram x0 clutch mech should easily handle the large sprocket and weight loss will be close to a pound, also going to remove the Bionicon C-guide as the narrow/wide ring and clutch mech should keep the chain in check. Going to stick some lighter tyres on which should add up to a total weight loss of a kilo or so which will make the bike better for general trail/xc riding as I have the Canyon for the more extreme stuff. pics to follow.
    gear ratios
    existing set up
    24x36= 17.8 inches
    32x11= 77.1 inches
    new set up
    30x40=19.9 inches
    30x11=72.4 inches
    I lose a bit either end but should still have enough gears for most situations. The bike will only ever see use off Road in trail conditions.I look forward to trying this set up, it should be smooth, quiet, light and reliable. The blackspire 30t middle ring has made this set up possible, it has clever built in spacers which allow 30teeth on a standard 104bcd 4 bolt spider, luckily the ring fits onto the Middleburn X-type Duo spider and looks super neat. All the bits are now on and the bike is ready for riding, will report back when I have had a chance to try it out. Bike now weighs 25lbs, not bad for a bike with160mm forks, Saint brakes and a hydraulic dropper. Pics as soon as I can.

    it's much stiffer than a standard qr although you're screwed if you forget the spanner.

    Here are some pics of my 1X10 conversion. If I'm honest I am not blown away with the shifting performance of the Leonardi General Lee sprockets although I will have a tinker when I have more time. In the mean time I have ordered a green oneup components 42t sprocket as it looks a better product for shifting performance, had to order a green one or it was a long wait so I will remove the green anodising as soon as it turns up. Also fitted a 55mm all black Easton Haven stem since these pics were taken, I found the 45mm stem great on the downs but a bit of a struggle on the climbs so I hope the 55mm will strike the right balance.

  • Ver very nice. I really like the changes you've made over time.

    Is that an inner-tube wrapped in tape as a chainstay protector? It looks a lot more slick than my tube (although I need to re-do mine as it's got a bit tatty)

    Cheers

    Here are some pics of the oneup components 42t sprocket. Easy to fit and works perfectly. I know it's green but there is a big wait on black ones, if it really bugs me I will have it anodised a more suitable colour.
