    El Gorrión

    That's looking good.

Makes me think of the Brazilian football legend, Garrincha "little bird".

Little bird is Pajarito in Spanish, according to Google translate.

Pajarito is also slang for camp, especially in Latin America. Not sure about Colombia specifically. Probably not appropriate for Nairo.

Right now if we're going by the TV series, Team Lannister. But he's really more of a John Gadret type, so Team Varys.

Which is what you expect his voice to be before he booms out that base.

It's the same with other riders tho' isn't it? Chavanel is quite high when you think it would be low whereas Tommy's voice is quite deep.

What makes him different is the total lack of emotion he shows, so I really like The Assassin as someone mentioned. He showed that today.

I've been thinking of the Steely Dan 'Hey Nineteen' whenever the fine Columbian has been mentioned:

    'The Cuervo Gold
    The fine Colombian
    Make tonight a wonderful thing'

Sorry about that. Pernicious little ditty.

Not only does the little Colombian not have his own thread yet, I can't even find if he's got a decent nickname.

I'd go for "The Sparrow" or something like that.

Nah, "Force ghost" - a shadow of his former self.
  • Don't want to get ahead of myself, but how long until this kid wins a grand tour? Great last mountain stage

I reckon next year's Giro or Vuelta are his best bet... can't see Froome wanting to give up the yellow to someone else.

  • My favourite moment on the tour is when he went past TV Tommy on Stage 8. Tommy was gurning and weaving up the Col de Pailheres and Quintana just sailed past him with his poker face. So whatever is Spanish for "Makes Voeckler look like a tw@".

I don't recall any rider who has united the forum like Quintana (insert appropriate nickname). One or two mentions of wheelsucking, but even then with approval. Was anyone not happy to see him get the win yesterday (apart from JRod, obv.)?
  • On the nickname thing, I thought I'd heard that he was named 'the flying beetle' back in Colombia. It was either that, or this is the generic name they give to that type of rider.

    How about 'Finest Hilary Roo'

Finest - as in finest Columbian.
Hilary - as in Edmund Hilary.
Roo - as in Quintana Roo

I saw him on Twitter referred to by I assume fellow Colombians, as 'El Águila de Boyaca', The Eagle of Boyaca.
Saw him in the flesh go up the Alpe and he is so tiny, so the sparrow as suggested may be a better name. Either way he flies!

No, I'd go with "Cobra" because he attacks relentlessly.

I seem to be in a minority of one in saying that I have not warmed to him, not sure why. I think it might have its basis in his post-stage interviews, which I appreciate is entirely unfair but what can you do

    His parents:

"En attendant que la montagne pointe le bout de ses cols, la maman et le papa du grimpeur Nairo Quintana se mangent une bonne petite soupe."

"Du coup, Luis Quintana, qui avait invité quelques amis dans son jardin, en a pleuré dans sa soupe."
