The Cardinal is a good one. A little close to Menchov's Pope though, but I like it. I now have visions of Jeremy Iron's in The Mission.

Naitro (or Nitro Quim Lama) (or Nitro Quim Farmer)

..he reminds me of Pigsy from the 70s show Monkey although I don't know why! http://www.monkeymania.co.uk/monkeymagic/characters.htm

If he is 23, and Uran is 26, I have come to the conclusion that Columbia is actually on Neptune.
It reminds me of David Moyes when he said about Yakubu "He's only 25, albeit a Nigerian 25"

Of all of these, The Sparrow, is the best.

But he doesnt really need one as `Quintana` is short and cool in and of itself. I can understand if he was called Toby or Chris or something.

I've been going with Nairo "oh he's so cute and cuddly" Quintana, but it's probably verging on patronising.

The Elder. Not only does it makes him sound old, but it's also the name of a tree. And he has a younger brother on the same team (next year) - so if we can all hold off on using it until then.

Cute & Cuddly? OK. To me he looks like the sort of person who carries a knife in his jersey pocket for when things turn nasty.

(I hasten to add, I don't think he actually does)

I'm surprised noone on here hasn't called him Nairo-ey, seeing as that's what they add to most names :)

I was trying to make is sound even sh1tter :) ...adding 'ey' or 'ie' to the end of a name always sounds immature to me :)
  • This is dumb, you can't force a nickname. Especially when you have fuck all to go on.

He would be Quinto (or perhaps Quints at a push) but never Quinty. Nearly 30 years of playing team sports has given a good sense of these matters.

-y is generally for lengthening names - Smithy, Giggsy, Scholesy, Froomey.

Me neither. He says 'impassive' to me that is why I like The Judge.

    There's also:

    The Chancellor
    The Adjudicator
    The Magistrate

EDIT - If we're going to do it in Spanish, the El Juez, El Canciller, El Conciliador etc. etc.

    El Gorrión

    That's looking good.

Makes me think of the Brazilian football legend, Garrincha "little bird".

Little bird is Pajarito in Spanish, according to Google translate.

    Ok
    How about The Raven?

Fly in the mountains, feast on the dead, pretty impassive looking.

    El Cuervo.

    Matt Rendell says:

"He seems to be known, even to the Spanish, as simply Nairo: no need to say which Nairo. Just as Herrera was simply Lucho."

    I like El Cuervo.

I've been thinking of the Steely Dan 'Hey Nineteen' whenever the fine Columbian has been mentioned:

    'The Cuervo Gold
    The fine Colombian
    Make tonight a wonderful thing'
