Fear not! The runway is to remain as an RLG (Relief Landing Ground) at the very least, plus to host NATO exercises etc etc. The Army will also use it as an Airhead for troop deployment. That is if ALL the Typhoon's go at all. Lots of twists and turns to come.At the erse end o' a coo!0 -

Plenty of headroom, but we did once have to hurriedly rescue one of the Boss's jelly babies from the canopy after it fell out of his pocket whilst inverted.
Now that brings back memories. I flew Bulldogs too, at Bristol UAS - got up to PIFG (preliminary IF grade) - really enjoyed IF. And what an experience as a student - "Ok Bloggs, you need to go off and do an hour's solo aerobatics". If you insist... Memories include night aerobatics over the Clifton suspension bridge (very naughty - not me but my instructor "If anyone asks, Bloggs, it wasn't us."
Fun planes to fly - pity limited to around 30s inverted flight due to the fact that the engine had a dry sump.
In fact I flew this one.
In fact I did my 1st solo in XX654, quite an emotional moment when I spotted her at RAF Cosford 30 years later!
Also had a go in one of these.
Up with an instructor assessing a pupil in another Hawk low-level through Wales. Quite vomit-making taking dictation from the instructor on his observations, head down in cockpit writing on knee-pad, pulling +4G and -3G with G-suit trying to eject stomach's contents. Still a great experience!
Also got to fly one of these:
On takeof, the trim changes were so great as IAS increased that if you didn't keep in trim, the forces on the yoke were such that you ended up stuck having to keep two hands on it and couldn't reach up to trim!
And the piece de resistance was a trip in one of these.
Only just managed it - the Wing Commander for whom we were the target in a target practice session called his plane u/s as we were on the threshold. My pilot ("Clachy" - Neil McLaughlan - sadly killed a year or two later practising with the Red Arrows) said "We didn't hear that", and off we went.
An amazingly tight cockpit. I'm not large and neither was Clachy - but the non-handling pilot had to cross his arms and/or hold his inside arm away from the other pilot so that he could move his shoulders enough to fly!
The plane was so old that it could only be flown with two pilots because for some undiagnosed reason the brake chute would only deploy if both handles were pulled.

Came across this on You of the Tube. Probably one of the best if not the best filming I have seen of modern day fighters from L'Armee de L'Air

Also this is a very amusing clip taken from the control tower at an airport in Oz of a fully laden 'vodka burner'. Amusing commentary from the air traffic controllers.

That control tower one is a classic!
If you want a full-on jetporn video it's got to be the Red Flag film they showed in the Smithsonian IMAX theater. It gave my mate a migraine
Best watched in 720p or higher...

Excellent movie of Red Flag. Cheers for that.
Best plane ever?..........Gotta be the one and only Vulcan..XH558. Incredible design considering the era it comes from and the howl of those 4 Olympus engines is just awesome.

... re-enactment of the Wright Brothers first flight at Kittyhawk, North Carolina at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, OH (where the Brothers actually learned how to control the plane in three axis)...
Unfortunately, the pilot did not have both airspeed and altitude when executing the above illustrated turn and buried a wingtip resulting in a crash. He escaped with minor injuries to his self, but bigger ones to his pride (he'd built the plane and had flown it before).0 -
not sure what the flying boat is in my post, the other one is an HP victor i think.0

What was wrong with my Vulcan cockpit a few posts up??
NOT from XH558, its much more authentic and original than that.0
