Good start! The first thing I bought for my next build project was the Q/R skewers . . .Specialized Roubaix Elite 2015
XM-057 rigid 29er0 -
Don't get Cobalt wheels! Get some DT240s on Light Bicycle carbon rims or something, be far nicer.0
-
Got a link and rough price?
Only have around £3,000 to play with...0 -
Lurcher looks like a good basis, will watch this with interest!
£3000 - I wish!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Feel free! Cos I can't!
Cheers dude!0 -

I thought the same, now rolling on own built wheels - worries the heck out of me mind, keep thinking one will taco due to my incompittance!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Haven't tried...did you follow a guide?0
-
XTR 2x10 is also something im considering,
anyone got a good idea on what gearing to use?
40/28 or 42/30 or 44/30 crank
with
11/34 or 11/36 cassette
any thoughts?0 -
Just get XX1, the range isn't that far removed from XTR double frankly! Significantly lighter too.0
-
its the replacement cost thats swaying me....ill get a season out a cassette that costs £300!0
-
Sum total of the transmission (ie rings/chain/cassette) is bloody close though, you save a bit on the cassette, but XTR rings are big money.
Change chains and you'll get a couple of years out of a cassette, and shop around and it's a good chunk less than £300. It also costs less in the first place - the chainset is about £200 cheaper!
But yes, I do agree.0 -

quite fancy those built on some king hubs..!(Cheers Al @ wheelcraft for putting that idea in my head!) are they reliable for mtb...ive only ever used carbon rims on the road...whats this light-bicycle company like? dealt with them before?
interesting stuff!0 -

so heres the build list, minus wheels and bars (not decided on them yet any ideas? carbon/flat bar preffered) which ill order from light-bike and the Chris King ISO hubs from Al @ wheelcraft in campsie den who will be building them....hopfeully arrive midweek

have you checked merlin and the german places for prices of the full groupsets, as opposed to individual bits?
gonna be a very nice build"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

Not nearly enough XX1.
Ditch the Crank Bros stuff - Ritchey WCS stem, you don't need a QR seatclamp on a race bike, just adds weight.
XTR race brakes over the Hopes for my money, particularly as there were some good deals once they announced the new version. Braided hoses add weight too - I'd not bother (unless that's the only choice?).
If you must go XTR get an 11-36 cassette, no point bothering with 10 speed otherwise. What you have there has a pretty similar range to XX1 while costing more and being significantly heavier.
Chris King hubs are heavy and need quite a bit of maintenance, for me they were a huge disappointment frankly, DT all the way. King headsets are awesome though.
Don't buy it all from CRC either, bet you can save a chunk looking elsewhere.0 -
cheers, have looked around and have got a few items cheaper saved around £90 so far
thing is im a vain bast and stuffs gotta match....no reds/blues in the build lol gold/black/silver only...hence some of the items ordered...obviously they have to be decent too.
deffo sticking with xtr, again purely for damage cost...as this isnt a sole race only bike...itll be used frequently.
good point on the seat clamp...!0 -
X01 coming in the next few months. You'll easily get a couple of years out of an XX1 cassette, it's only about £80 more than an XTR one, and it'll cost you more than that in initial outlay. Honestly think that's a badly thought out decision, particularly with those ratios as you have a near identical range.
My XX cassette lasted longer than XTR, being all steel the sprockets don't wear as much.0 -
nothing solidly groupset wise paid for yet so time for thinking about it....i do appreciate the opinions, great stuff thanks0
-
I just think that cost is the wrong motivator between those two. Having had XX, XTR 2x10 and now running XTR 1x10 on a race bike I'd definitely get xx1 next time!
Just noticed the price of that seat collar... WTF?! Almost as bad as the Tune one.0 -
haha swapped out for a hope bolt on0
-
Much more sensible!0

Bar suggestion - Easton EC90Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Was thinking about the Thomson carbon flat bar....0
-
Mt Zoom, fantastic for nice light finishing kit.0
-
cool ill take a look
has anyone direct experience with the carbon rims from Light-Bicycle?0 -
I don't, but a couple of friends have them (one 650b and one 29er), and have no issues. I'd definitely get a pair.0
-
just ordered a set, worth a shot...not going to expect Enve like quality...but you never know!
3K, 32h, Matte finish....also went for the wider profile just to be on the safer side.
still gonna go for the King ISO hubs i think though... (yea a bit heavier, i know lol)
rough cost of the wheelset will be £770, not including spokes and building...not too bad i dont think for carbon..?0 -
Wasn't so much the weight of the Kings that annoyed me, it was the fact they were heavier whilst needing more adjustment and not rolling as well. Pretty though.
The rims come out of the same factory as Spesh/Roval rims, just a whole chunk cheaper!0
