hello, new to the forum so please be nice :)

I purchased a Vulcan today, have to say I am very disappointed in the workmanship. there is a very small chunk of paint off the main frame of the bike, scratches on the seat post, scratches on the shocks, the saddle was dirty, the screws that keep the drink holder in place was rounded off so allen key would not go in...

now onto the bike itself, the majority of the gear changes do not run smoothly, the chain rubs against the middle gear changer, the gears do not actually change into the really hight or low ones, one tire is, how do I put it...lob sided (so when you spin it, it kinda had a bulge), the disk break rubs against the pads.....

needless to say I am going back there tomorrow and expect them to do something. The only problem is, EVERY store was sold out and this was the only one that had it in (had to go 15 miles or so to get it)

It might be more use finding a job than a cheap suit and a bad haircut.

    Halfords is generally shit!

most Halfords are generally shit if you can get the bike cheap enough you can fix the problems your self.
you want at least £50-100 of the ticket price cost you that for a decent place to repair there mistakes

    thats what I am thinking

I bought this from the shop 15 mils or so away in the next town, so I will take it to my closest one, which is literally 5 mins up the road, see what they say. problem is they might not offer discount as it wasnt that store that sold it

if Halfords is like many other places there probably try telling you that you caused them problems yourself and try charge you if I was I would get a full refund and buy something from decathlon that way its good quality

Only reason I went to Halfords is for an 'expert' to put it together for me

I think decathlon will build your bike nicely and so the gears work properly if you visit there store and give them some money. if not take it to a bike specialist and get it fixed or try hire someone on here

To be honest I didn't even know decathlon existed until I read about them earlier, nearest one to me is Coventry - I am in northampton so not a million miles away. Will consider them depending on what Halfords say tomorrow

Or just read Parktools and index it yourself. It's a bit of routine maintenance anyway.

When I bought my Kraken it was a reduced price discontinued 2007 model, and the last one. The monkeys who assembled it did a similarly crap job to yours, with loose fasteners, poorly indexed gears, a scratched seatpost (from the unprotected metal jaws on their workstand) and a small scratch on the crank. I took it back, made sure they set the gears up properly and got a new seatpost (and seat) from another unboxed stock bike. They offered to swap the cranks over for unmarked ones from the unboxed bike too, or some compensation instead. Tbh, I wasn't overly bothered about getting new cranks (or letting those monkeys fit them), since they were going to get scratched riding it off road anyway, so I got a £20 pair of gloves and £25 in gift vouchers out of them instead.

Ok, took the bike in. He told me he knew there were problems with the store I purchased from. He basically said the front break was basically bent and he thinks the shop had done it. He couldn't offer me the voodoo Bantu as the one they had in had problems with the hydraulics so he offered me £50 off the carrera kraken, decided to take him up on the offer. See what tomorrow brings when I collect.
