Predicament; help needed

In a bit of a pickle; would appreciate your help.

On 3rd July I'm flying out to France for the Marmotte (6th) with my bike.

Immediately prior to that, however, I'm going to be in Cyprus on a family holiday, from next Friday (21st) through to 2nd July.

I won't have my bike with my during that time - and I'm having a real issue finding somewhere I can hire a bike from (although have had some very kind help from a forum member here to point me in the right direction).

Obviously, I don't want to sit on my hands for 2 weeks doing no training immediately before a major event, particularly given the 6 months of hard training I've put into it, but I'd welcome advice from others as to how to solve this issue.

It does look like I can hire a bike, but only for the final 5 days whilst I'm in Cyprus, that means I'll be off the bike for the first 5 days. I might be able to hire a bike for the full 10 days, but it'll be quite expensive to do so.

What can I do in that time to keep things ticking over?

I can hire a MTB and will have access to a gym (and spin bikes) during that time, so would I lose much by spending the first 5 days off the bike but spinning/running, before picking things up on the bike for the final 5 days?

Am a little paranoid that all the fitness gains I've got might be undone by 10 days without training, but equally struggling to get access to a bike during that time.

I was in a similar position to you four years ago. About to do my first Marmotte and the wife had booked two weeks in Greece during the month before hand. I waited until I got out there and looked around. I ended up buying an old mountain bike from a flea market for about £30, rode up and down the mountains on dirt tracks for a couple of weeks, and then gave it to some kids when we left. It was a shit bike but it did the job. You could probably get something rideable from a large supermarket for less than £100.

If you've been training well & correctly you won't lose much in ten days. Rest 5 days, use the hire bike for a couple of really hard intervall sessions. Personally I wouildn't cycle right up to the event - but thats just me. presumably you know what you need to focus on. I'm sure you'll be fne!
