Differing file type extensions

What's the difference between the various file tiles when using GPS devices? I use Cyclemeter normally when out pedalling but just started uploading to strava. Strava will accept files ending in .tcx .fit or .gpx. Cyclemeter will export in .gpx .kml .csv or .tcx. So when do I use each one and for what reason? I also use a polar HRM and would like to link that data to a ride measured using Cyclemeter etc. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance

GPX is a file that that as its name suggests, GPX, or GPS eXchange Format is an XML schema designed as a common GPS data format for software applications. This format allows interchangeability acrooss devices and applications.

Please also note that a gpx file may contain, a gpx track, a gpx route, gpx waypoint data or all three, therefore not all gpx files are the same.

FIT & TCX are proprietary garmin file types.

Where possible I would always use a gpx file due to the ease of editing the raw data if required.

Ok thanks. And how about a .csv extension? What can I do with that?

CSV files will generally import directly into excel for manipulation. They are simple text files therefore can also be viewed with any text editor.
In the case of gps programs they may be a series of track points, waypoints or similar.

You would need to use tcx if there is heart rate or cadence data as gpx files can't contain that.

    You can use this

to convert your CSV file (from LeMond Revolution) to Tcx so you can upload to Garmin/Strava
