The BBC should really put DH results on its website after all thats the beebs remit to cover everything.

However DH is a niche sport with a very small number of people who take part. The town and surrounding area I live in has a population of about 30,000 and a quick google has brought up 4 bowling clubs, 2 tennis clubs, 2 cricket clubs, 4 football clubs, 3 snooker teams, 2 golf courses, 12 darts teams and 3 horse riding stables. On a saturday/sunday It wouldnt surprise me if more people are taking part in some sporting activity in my small town than attend the average National DH race.

you're right, my town probably has around the same amount of clubs etc. but it'd be interesting to see how many people visit a trail centre(s) over a weekly period. also a lot of people I know don't visit trail centres that often - myself included- so they wouldn't appear on those figures.

I know it's still a niche sport, but do we have any idea really how many people mountain bike as I doubt there's any figures? (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong  )

But we arent talking about people who visit trail centres we are talking about DH which takes place at some trail centres. DH and the stuff I do at trail centres is roughly the same as me playing footy in the park compared to pro footy players.

We're actually talking about people who would like to watch DH. Which if I'm not wrong would be mainly mountain bikers. Mountain bikers visit trail centres don't they?

I appreciate where you're coming from though.

People will watch things that they don't participate in though. Such as Rallying, or F1.

For what it's worth I would like to see DH on TV or at least hear results in the sports round ups, specifically if a brit is doing well. What i think would be good is a short programme with a mix mash of extreme/adventure sports and results from differeng events.

I think it's a real shame that the public don't get to learn about sports and activities when they happen, rather than being spoon fed the sh!t that we do. Anyone heard of a guy called Aaron Hadlow? Probably not, and that's dissapointing because he was 5 time consecutive (sp?) world champ, this was before he was 22, and he's a brit, of another minority sport that doesn't seem to get the attention of the main broadcasters in the UK. In the same way that poeple should have heard of Steve Peat, among others, I think it would have been nice to hear that a brit has dominated the world of freestyle kitesurfing, another thing that us brits seem to be pretty good at on the world scene.

The BBC has some sports engrained in their make up. Snooker for one. Far more people bike than play snooker. But the little old dears cannot get enough of the dulcet tones of Willy and Dennis, which is why so many watch. Same for indoor bowls, skiing, gymnastics, horse dancing and a whole host of other games and passtimes that the BBC has made popular.

    I miss Grandstand.

The thing is the majority of the UK public just aren't interested in these kinds of sports. They'd much rather sit with half an eye watching the bloody tennis, a game where you stand there and hit balls with a stick. Whether you find it exciting or not, it works for the mass public because it's simple and they can go and do it themselves once a year as part of their new year resolution to lose weight and look like the next celebrity in heat magazine who also ran in the London Marathon and is therefore a much more valuable person to society than Steve Peat because she "ran for a good cause, or something?" whereas they can't go and do DH MTB because they might get a bit muddy and besides none of the top riders are shown in the media enough for them to look cool in front of their collegues for saying they do a sport where such and such does and don't you know, she's also on the same diet plan as me which was written by a professional chef and we both watch strictly come dancing!

TL;DR most people are for some reason more interested in boring sports.

I think the BBC have made certain sports interesting, by continually broadcasting them, combined with their history in the corporation.

Wimbledon has become some sort of national summer fortnight, as has the darts at Christmas, and the Open golf.

I think the BBC could do the same for MTBing if they started, people would learn, mayeb like it, watch it and so on.

Thing is do we really want even more people going out and buying a Boardman on C2W and clogging the trail centres and countrysides every weekend?

It's really kind of sad that, after the support and the "GREAT Britain" attitude of the Olympics, and the temporary limelight on our successful athletes and sportspeople who rightfully deserved praise, that the very next year, the success of someone like the Athertons goes wholly unnoticed. Not to mention the return to complete disinterest in women's sports.

What knock on effects? I could even see the price of bikes going up as a result knowing the bike industry.

Got to agree with Bennet there, yeah, there's knock on effects maybe, but not necessarily positive ones.
The price of your general "pretty damned good bike" (I know that's a bit scientific and precise  ) has gone up faster than inflation in the last 20 years I'd say. Considerably so.
Late 90s, I seem to recall, perhaps incorrectly, that a £3K bike was just astonishingly expensive, even for the hard-core. Now it seems to be the middle-of-the-range price.
