Just beat my 50 mile PB and threw up my recovery drink..

Did a 53 mile solo ride today on a familiar loop and managed a 20mph average, which is a PB for that distance (road bike, no aero bars  ), but during the hour afterwards I started to feel increasingly nauseous and ended up violently throwing up my choc soya milk... Immediately felt much better, but 3 hours later and I'm only just feeling like I might be able to eat something.

I've occasionally felt slightly nauseous after hard efforts on slightly longer routes but nothing like this. I was pushing really hard towards the end just to keep the average above the magic 20 and I was a little dehydrated (first really warm day of the summer here, underestimated how much water I'd need), but nothing worse than I've been many times before.

Was it just dehydration, or maybe electrolyte imbalance? (I often take one bottle of water and one of gatorade when it's hot, but I only had water this time).

Does your shirt have obvious white staining? That indicates a large loss of salt thru sweat.

For a ride that length, I definitely recommend having a carb / electrolyte drink such as Gatorade. And have it in both bottles.

Doing 20mph average solo for that distance is quite an accomplishment!

The 'choc soya milk' wouldn't be my choice .... I use vanilla whey protein powder mixed with lemon/lime Gatorade for 'recovery' immediately after riding. I've never had digestive trouble with it.

Personally I avoid anything with milk after any kind of long hard workout as I can't stomach it very well. I've got some cheapo unflavoured whey which I mix with water. I usually have something sugary at the same time.
Yesterday (32 miles) I took a 750ml bottle of electrolyte drink and a banana on my ride. You're riding longer and quicker than me though. My unqualified advice would be that riding at that intensity, especially when it's warm, requires carbs and electrolytes. Dropping the Gatorade was probably unwise because of the intensity you rode at.

Yeah, I'm thinking now it was a combination of factors, slight dehydration, no electrolytes, difficult to digest recovery drink, and pushing too hard at the end when I was knackered (no way I'd have been doing that if I'd been looking at 19.7 mph..) Also maybe my metabolism not yet being acclimatised to the warmer weather.

Going to get some whey and gatorade..

Serious answer: it could be just that you pushed yourself harder than usual. Everyone reacts differently to pushing themselves harder than ever before. Sports nutrition products may not change that. How long have you been riding and how often do you ride as hard as you did?

I was probably pushing harder than I've done so far this year over that sort of distance. I've been riding for some time, but I live in Finland so there is always a period of adjustment in the spring/early summer. Most of my winter cycling is indoors and sessions are usually only an hour or 90mins at most.

Probably not pacing myself too well. There seems to be a big difference between a 40 mile ride and a 50 mile+ ride (for me at least), I think I need to treat the 50 mile rides more like 70 mile rides and less like 40 mile ones.

Sounds like exhaustion to me. Only time I've ever pushed myself that far was when walking the final day of the Pennine Way. Instead of celebrating in the pub I spent the evening throwing up.
