Which frame upgrade, Ridley Orion or Scott CR1 SL

Looking to pull the trigger on a frame upgrade pretty much asap. Currently have a BMC streetracer (alu frame, carbon fork).

My budget is roughly £500, and my two current choices are the Ridley Orion 1204b frameset from CRC or the Scott Cr1 SL from Westbrook cycles, both tipping the maximum budget.

I'm 6'1" and looking for something pretty racey and stiff. I'm 82kgs so stiffness is more important than weight.

I'm aware of the fact that the CR1 is marketed as a 'sportive' bike, but there isn't a huge amount of difference between the L CR1 and the M Ridley Orion (5mm difference in the TT and 1mm difference in the HT). I rented a M Ridley Orion for a week of cycling in Tenerife last week, and got on fine with it, in fact I found it more comfortable than my current bike, which now feels cumbersome in comparison.

Has anyone any experience with both of these, and if it was your money, what would you buy?

Could that be because people are realising how good Scott bikes really are...

That CR1 SL at Westbrook looks seriously good value. Anybody know if that is the more sportive style frame Scott do? was think of maybe switching over to that from my Pinarello FP Quattro as it's not doing my back any favours and on our terrible roads here thinking the Scott may offer a more comfortable ride over the Pina?

If you look through the threads on the CR1 - mainly in the Commuting Chat sub-forum, lots in the general Bargains' thread, then you can see the opinion of a good many.
FWIW I think it is between a hard-core racer : that was the Addict or tthe Foil : and a sportive frame so it is pretty stiff but it does have a higher / shorter position (longer head tube & shorter top tube). Also has some flex built-in to the frame. I understand that there have been occasions that pro-teams used the CR1 in preference to the Addict such as on Paris-Roubaix so it might be classed as a slightly softened race bike.

Unsure as to sizing on the Scott's - do they generally come up on the larger size? My Pinarello is the 465s. I am 169cm with inside leg of 77cm so was thinking maybe the Small, 52cm Scott would be the right fit?
  • Forget the "Sportive", tag bolleaux of the CR1 and buy one quick before they go at that price.

Before Sportive was so popular and before the Addict was born, the CR1 was what a lot of pro teams and domestic racers were on. I used to have one and upgraded to Addict, but the CR1 is a lovely frame.

Scott have fantastic warranty also. My CR1 laquer started to bubble a tiny tiny bit (I'm convinced I may have washed it with too hot water  ), and they exchanged/ upgraded me to the Addict with no quibbles at all.

Sounds perfect (to be good to be true), a real world light weight race bike. Sign me up - oh, I already hit the trigger.

I know and am desperate to buy one (!) but will it be any better / more comfortable than the Pinarello? No chance of trying one for size as my local Scott dealers only carry Med & Large! I am worried the Small may feel too large?

I'm not sure, but looking at your Quattro geometry compared to CR1 geometry, the CR1 in size Extra Small has the same size top-tube at 51.5. Head tube lengths are 120 Quattro to 116 CR1

I think the Small in the CR1 with it's taller head tube would be a more relaxed fit than my current Pinarello or am I getting this all wrong?

You can always buy the Scott frameset off eBay - there will be a few of these appearing in the near future I'm sure!

Bargain - I will keep my eye out on ebay. Maybe able to get one for around £750 if I am lucky?

As they are running out of stock at Westbrook on these CR1's, I have pulled the trigger this morning on a Small (52cm) and will take the chance if it fits or not (hope so at 5'7"?) - Doubt I will loose too much if I put it on fleabay if it doesn't fit so worth a punt in my book.

Only Small & XXL left now - Reckon there's going to be a few Scott's on the road shortly.........

You forget that the CR1 underwent a makeover a few years ago, to make it a little more forgiving with sightly less racey geometry.

Regardless, given the choice of a Ridley Orion and the CR1 SL from Westbrook, the Ridley wouldn't even get a second thought. It's a pity that they aren't getting any in size XS. As it is, a 52cm frame should fit somebody who is 169cm just fine.

Well, Westbrook have sold their allocation now, so unless you pulled the trigger and got one, looks like you are left with only one option now.

Just looked - It's showing that all sizes are in stock now? Bummer as I really wanted an XS but went with the S thinking I could move it on if it was too big.

Might have to send this back to Westbrook & go with the XS instead if they have it????

I looked this morning and the CR1s had disappeared. Just went back and had a look and it seems they have stock again. So I took it as a sign that I should stop faffing and bloody order one. So I did :D
  • Wel dun that man

Someone is selling a AX Lightness seatpost on the classifieds, will fit a treat.

I couldn't resist.. the button has been pressed on a 56cm.
Hope it's the right size. I'm 5' 10 with 33" inside leg and long arms. Now to do more sizing research on the old web......

I ordered a M I'm 176CM/5'10", 32" inseam . Have spoke to a couple of guys at work who have them asked people on here and looked at size charts till I'm blue in the face. Dont think I'll be far off. Guess I'm lucky as Westbrook are very local to me and I'm picking mine up either Fri or Sat from the shop so maybe they will have one in stock I can try but I'm 99 per cent happy with my frame choice.

I'm about the same measurements as you and have also gone for the 54. I chose the 54 based on sizing from the Competitive Cyclist fit calculator. I figure that's close enough and the rest can be adjusted with different size stems.

Currently I ride a 56 Trek 1.5 and while it fits me ok, I do notice that my lower back tends to start aching after a while.

You must work in my office !! A guy here rides a Trek a large but I've taken measurements from it and its almost identical to the CR1 M, in the critical areas I was concerned with. Even when he bought the bike he tried a medium Scott and said there was no difference in how the two sizes felt. So I'm happy having seeing his frame how the Scott is going to look once built.

Looks great - can't wait to get mine built now!

Quick question - what is the clearance like in the rear stays? I am hoping to put on my H Plus Son Archetype Wheelset with 25mm tyres and was reading it may be tight? Saw a video on You Tube of the Orica Green Edge team running the CR1 SL for Paris-Roubaix 2012 with 25mm tyres so I guess it can be done?

Weeman, looks like there'd be plenty of clearance for 25mm tyres!
