big cup of tea, 1 sugar not much milk
    2 pints of water

 Does that not go straight through you, D0?

Half the trick of hydrating is to drink it over a long period of time. I might get a pint down me but only if I start sipping it the moment I wake up. Keeping at least a pint next to the bed to sip overnight is useful too.

I drink a pint before bed most nights and then have a pint by my bed overnight. Most of the time I drink my night pint in the morning, so that is one of the two pints included in my list. I make sure I use the toilet just before I go on my ride. Never had to stop to go on the side of the road, but do p1ss like a racehorse when I get home!

I did a 40 ride home with 3000 odd foot of climbing.

Had a banana at 15:30ish set off at 17:30, Had a Coke (330ml) at 8-9miles in, then an energy gel at 22ish.

By 26 miles I had really bad gut cramps but was past the big climby bits.

When I got in it looked and felt like my abs wouldn't relax(not that you can see them under the blubber).

It took a donner salad and a lie down to sort it out.

I really don't have this fueling lark sorted out yet!
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

just more of what you might eat on a normal ride. You really don't want to start experimenting on your first century.

Half the battle is eating well BEFORE the ride - making sure you get a good breakfast - Can't emphasise that enough

As others have said, drink well... I like the ZipVit ZV8 bars - they're fab. Bananas are awesome. But, seriously, eat what you know. And keep eating. Also, pace yourself. I can ride all day at 140bpm - several days in a row.

^ This, especially the bits in bold. Did my first century on Tuesday, ate every 40 minutes, the same stuff as I would normally eat on a 60/70 mile ride: I too like the ZV8 bars and also the SiS Go bars. Also normal cereal bars, bananas, malt loaf and a couple of cheese sandwiches. Had a rough spell around 92-97 miles but then perked up again and I flew the last 30-odd...

    Had a Coke (330ml) at 8-9miles in,

I was just wondering how you managed a Coke then discovered that perhaps you didn't

There's just far too much gas in a Coke for me to manage on a ride. I have used Coke on rides before but only flat and mixed 50:50 with water which was how it was recommended to me (it's not especially pleasant)

Echo the biggest breakfast you can cope with comments. Once out Clif bars are my current favourite - choc chip are great. If gels are not for you try clif shot blocks - basically very chewy sweets - strawberry ones are pretty tolerable if you need a quick hit.

I've done 45 miles on nothing but air without my guts feeling vacuum packed 2/3 of the way through.

    Finished!!

in the end did 118 miles

started at 2am got into laaandon at about 10:30

im pretty i wasn't eating enough, after 60odd miles i didn't want to continue, but after eating copious amounts of flapjacks an haribo i was ready to kick ass again an actually felt like i was riding much better

box hill was fun, quite scary though with cars an cyclists basically coming straight at you at 100,00mph

    Cool - well done, Mudcow!

Now you probably appreciate the advice about eating and keeping eating

Well done mudcow. Thought of you as I was lapping RP on Sat morning. Saw a couple of people wearing HTH kit and guessed they had been on your ride.

Well done Mucky Heifer. I was lying in bed with my second cup of tea about the time you finished.
