What causes your crashes

Came very close to a real nasty off today, coming down a fast rocky descent a stick popped up from my front wheel, wedged under my rear mech and acted like a pole vault sending my rear end skywards. I about shat myself, but managed to ride it out on my front wheel with no more damage than a bent mech hanger and a couple of years off my life, never had that happen before!
We've all seen video of deers taking guys out, anything unusual caused you to crash?
