Garmin Bike Computers

Hi there

I am just looking to purchase a Garmin Edge 510 to help with training etc - a couple of questions - firstly does anyone have one (and are they any good) and secondly (not to sound like a cheap skate) where is the cheapest place to get one as they are rather pricey!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

Why are you looking to buy a 510 if you don't know if its any good? Surely a better question to ask would be "What's a good cycle computer to get that suits my needs bla bla bla"

Have a look at the Garmin forums: there seem to be a few teething problems with the 510. 500 is pretty solid and would be a bit cheaper. Handtec generally have the lowest prices.

From the reviews I've seen, the 510 seems to have various software teething problems and the only benefit over the 500 seems to be that it syncs with iPhone/Android wirelessly. I'd agree with bobones and look at the 500 instead. Amazon were also doing the blue/grey for just shy of £170 if handtec is out of stock.

Garmin 500 (blue/grey) with HRM and Cadence is now £149.99 on Amazon. Pretty good deal I think
  • I have the 510. When it works, it's brilliant (press 'stop' as I get onto the estate and by the time I stop outside the house I've uploaded it to the Garmin Connect App on my phone - genius).

However, as the above post says there have been issues - mainly dropping the connection with the phone/HRM. Happens maybe 1 in 10/1 in 15 - not terrible but frankly not good enough and incredibly annoying as it can be troublesome to pair again, especially to the phone. Very annoying when it drops mid-ride though.

Hoping for an eventual firmware upgrade to sort. Despite the problems, if I was buying now knowing what I know, I'd probably still pick this one. A firmware upgrade should resolve the issues at some point, you won't get the chance to upgrade a 500 at any point without buying another.

All comes down to how much you need (or let's face it, want) the additional functions.

Or just the latest version (mmm, shiney :D )
